Too many times pooping?

I'm having problems potty training my 3month Yorkie, Napoleon. I've had him for 3 weeks. One of the problems is that he poops many times a day, but just a bit at a time. For an example, half an hour after he eats, I take him out... He will attempt to poop several times by going into his "pooping stance"... sometimes something will come out, other times, nothing. Then I bring him in after 30-45 mins. An hour or so later, he might poop again in his crate or in my living room or outside on patio. This happens several times throughout the day and night. Does anyone have this problem with their Yorkie? I haven't changed his diet. He eats dry food. It is not uncommon for him to poop several times a crate in his crate while I'm sleeping.

What can I do? Will he grow out of this?

I could be wrong but this is more than a training issue I think. It doesn't make sense that he goes into his poop mode and nothing comes out. Usually if they are in that mode it comes out. He seems to young to have anal gland issues. Is his stool to dry and hard?

I had him about 2 days before he got struck with a bacterial infection (he had diarrhea for a bit..). So he was on antibiotics for a week during which time he was on canned food. After that week, I switched to dry food and his stool appears "normal" -- ie not too dry and hard and not too watery. I dunno what's bugging him. I wish I knew what he was like before he got that bacterial infection...

Did he have coccidia?

It was spirochetes I think.

The trying to poop with nothing or very little coming out makes me think he might be constipated. When he does poop are they small?

In any case, what I would do is give him a little piece of raw carrot. Works wonders for constipation when Joey has had it. If that makes him too loose, you should easily be able to firm him back up by sprinkling a little cooked rice over his food.

I was just curious...What do most ppl feed there puppies @ 5 months old...I have heard.. Purina and Science Diet Puppy? What is most common and would be the best for my baby Tiny?

Actually - puppies and younger dogs go to the bathroom more often than older dogs do ------ don't you remember changing those diapers when we had babies????

I wouldn't worry about it - I would make sure the hair on his little behind is cut short so that nothing sticks to it.

serelind- I have 4 older yorkies (well my girl is 5 and so are her two brothers), I have their niece and daughter (of one of the boys) and she is 3. I had problems training them because I do not agree in caging my dogs. Now I have 2 puppies from my three year old and I am going nuts!!! I work all day and my mom stays home and they do poop all day. I am lucky that they sleep in a little bed next to mine since they were 3 months old and I scold them to stay in it and they (sort of) sleep all night. Sometimes they poop during the night but I take them out around 9:00 p.m. and they poop outside then I put them in their bed. Most of the time now they sleep all night and I take them out at 6:00 a.m. and again they poop and pee. Meanwhile I go get dressed to go to work and about 30 minutes later I come back and they have pooped in the kitchen where I keep them with a baby door. Sometimes they are Ok and my mom gets up and finds poop anyway around 8:00 a.m. I only feed them dry food and the same as the adults, Beneful which is great because it has beef and chicken and vegetables. Eventually they will poop only after they eat but it takes time to train. I am having trouble even though they go when I take them out and sometimes during the day they go out and sometimes not. Have patience. and good luck

Buddie will do his business on his whee whee pad when he is in his area. If I let him out to run the house for playtime....he will pee and poop where ever he wants to. He doesnt go on the whee whee pad. I cannot figure this out to save my life. He is stubborn! But, I will fight the fight and win. Buddie will catch on sooner or later......I hope.

Kincdw - the best place to get answers on diet is on the "Health and Diet" board here at YorkieTalk. There is already a thread going about what people feed their yorkies. You'll find that most people like premium foods for their dogs, not what you find at the grocery store.

To see replies.... if you go to a different section of YT and then come back to your post, the new responses will be there. Well, they will if you click again on the section of YT that you want to go to. They may not show up if you hit the "back" button.
