Inherited Yorker-Re-training I am in desperate need of some help! I recently lost my Aunt and inherited her 8 year old Yorkie. I have had a yorkie before, but I raised that one from a puppy, and he never really had a chance to develop bad habits because we started training from day one. This little guy is very sweet and lovable, but training was not much of a priority in his previous home, and I also don't think he got much attention after she started getting really sick. So, here are the main issues I'm trying to correct.
First, he whines to go outside ALL THE TIME! In his previous home he had a doggie door and could go out whenever he wanted. Even then he would still poop and pee in the house. I can't put in a dog door in my home, but I am able to take him out anytime he needs to go. The problem is that he will whine to go out again almost as soon as we get in the house again. He doesn't go to the bathroom right away and mostly just wants to watch my neighbors. It's cold in Northern Michigan, so not much fun to be hanging out outside! He also never poops outside...only pees and poops inside when we aren't looking.
The other issue is eating...I'm feeding him the same food my Aunt did, but he won't touch it! He only wants to eat people food, which I am trying to limit.
Other than these two issues we are getting along great! He gives snuggles and kisses all the time and has recently discovered his new toys and has started to play a bit, but I need some help re-training him and I'm not sure where to start! |
