Crate training help please :( Hello all! I have an 8 week old yorkie named Lily and I purchased a crate for her saturday. I have been trying to positively introduce her to the crate. she has a bed, a shirt with my scent on it and her favorite toys. I have been teaching her "go to bed" and giving her chicken when she goes inside the crate. Whenever she falls asleep I place her in the crate so she can nap there and I lock the door and then I open it when I see she's waking up and take her to the pee pad. Also whenever she goes inside to play with her toys I lock it as well and let her out when she's done. Today I had a lunch to go to and I decided to see how she would do if I locked her in while put my make up on. she barked the entire time! i know its to be expected but did i make her hate the crate? i didn't let her out until I was finished and even then I waited outside my room until she settled down. currently i am not working but i start back on the 29th of febuary and would like her to be better by then. how did any one with success with the crate go about it? and am i on the right track?
At night i place her in it when she falls asleep and lock it and then when she wakes up i let her out until she falls asleep again. So she hasn't spent an entire night in it yet and hasn't been placed in it while she was wide awake involuntarily (Aside from today). |
