| ![]() Thank you for the message. I am going to look into the pen idea tonight. He isn't scared to use the doggie door by himself, when I'm home. I just wondered if he was scared to use it when I wasn't home, which is most likely the case! I'm glad that your dog was unharmed in your situation! I completely understand that this forum is a place where things can be said without moderation. I just wished that the entire situation went differently. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have posted my questions here. Thanks again for the message. Good luck. |

YT 1000 Club Member | ![]() Awwww you should always feel like you can ask questions. Believe me for every question asked there's probably 20 ppl at least who were wondering the same thing. When it comes to advice on forums sometimes the best thing to do is ignore whatever rudeness you perceive and use the actual educational responses that were given. The rudeness is just "filler" imo lol. |

| ![]() Hi OP, I am glad to see so many members contributed with, what I hope, you see as good advice. Since you like links here is one for you for the type of box I use for my boy who hikes his leg: ![]() Like I said in a previous post, if you want him to run around the basement and feel that he is trained enough to do so i.e. the only issue w/the pee or poop is because he has no indoor pad option and outside is a threat, then I believe this set up would be ideal for you and your dog. For what it's worth, I do believe you care about your dog or you wouldn't have bothered asking for advice. Naturally, we need to ask about things we're unsure of and, as experienced Yorkie owners, the only thing we're sure about in this situation is how bad the idea of a doggie door is for an unsupervised Yorkie. In addition to being maimed or killed by other animals, Yorkies are terriers and dig. When they are bored or stressed, they can dig manically and this could result in your dog digging into someone elses yard and getting killed by their pets, being stolen or running out into the road. There are so many reasons the doggie door is a bad idea and so I would strongly recommend that you discontinue use in this way immediately. I know it's hard to let go of things that aren't working because you WANT them to work but we'd all feel bad if you came back here to tell us that your dog passed away and that was the way that you and your dog had to learn from this mistake. We're trying to prevent heartache and pain for you both and I hope that comes across in the responses here. Good luck and please keep asking questions. Knowledge is not always innate and this holds true for all of us. |

I don't know what your situation was prior to moving in with this man, but if your pup was housebroken then, why is he not now? OR is it that he wasn't, but now he must be so as not to irritate the boyfriend? I cannot even begin to count how many yorkies around the age of 8 become homeless for this exact situation....a man who is not happy with the pup. Perhaps I am wrong, but it is what I read. I would never, EVER allow any pup to be outside unsupervised. I have seen the repercussions of that...if you find time you might do an Advanced Search for a story I wrote about a foster I had named Summer. She may or may not have been in a home with a doggy door but she clearly was mauled by larger dogs while most likely unsupervised. About $12,000 later she was saved. Sadly I have seen many more...most don't make it. If you need housebreaking solutions I suggest the following website: The Housebreaking Bible Telling people how to post and getting angry with them is not the solution to the problem at hand. That problem, as I see it, is not anything but a housebreaking issue and it is your job to housebreak him if that is what you want. He does not understand what is expected of him OR he indeed is afraid to do it your way. Either way the situation needs revision. Also, telling people you won't be back because you don't like hearing the truth? How will that help your sitation? Hearing what you want to hear is not going to fix this. If you knew what you needed to hear, you would not be here with this issue! There is a wealth of great information on this forum...and it comes from all sources, including the one poster you called out.

You will find, if you choose to stick around, that this is the way to learning these things.... you take what you can use and leave the rest behind.

| ![]() My friend lives on ten acres with two dogs, one a black lab, one a poodle mix. We have coyotes in the area. Her husband put in a doggie door from their laundry to outside with a covered dog house and a large dog run where they are protected with heavy duty wire walls, and ceiling where nothing can get into them. So when my friends are away from home the dogs can be inside or outside, which ever they choose. |

![]() ![]() ![]() This is really a great post, and I hope you can open your mind enough to really take it in bc what Linda is saying here is accurate and important. I do have to agree with her very strongly in that you *do* absolutely have a choice here as to how you proceed. It's 100000% up to you whether or not you choose to put your dog in harm's way. I, for one, could never ever live with myself if I did that to one of my precious babies...they're just too important to me and I love them beyond anything. Convenience should never take priority over safety when it comes to an innocent living being, imo. As for your disappointment in YT and how this transpired, I'm sorry to hear that's how you're choosing to view it. From my view, I see a HECK of a lot of care, thought, and concern given to this little innocent yorkie that none of us even know. In my book, that's a positive; certainly not a negative situation if you look at the big picture here (rather than focusing on whatever did not go your preferred way). That said, I am sorry to hear that your feelings were injured in any way, as that's never fun.
