Yes pain meds generally make most dogs sleepy. With LP the pins could come out with his surgery I don't know if they can come out or not.

It is hard to judge the pain bc he is still playing and moving around ok. I did give them to him tonight and they seemed to knock him out and make him a bit groggy. We will be following up with the orthopedic surgeon when he is in the office later on this week.

Once the leg is healed the pins are not necessary. They are there to stablilize the bones until they heal. Normally they are left in, but that is not because they must be there. If they move (migrate) then, they are removed. I had a pup who had knee surgery and some time later was showing some discomfort...she had two pins that had migrated. They removed them and she was fine!
