| Alpha and Dominance Theory Long ago I put alpha and dominance training aside. I know it was wrong and went to search for the info to prove that yes indeed I was right. I read Bones would Rain by Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier. Boy did it grab my attention and make me look harder. The I tripped over Dominance Theory and Dogs. By James O’Heare. Small little books by a Canadian Trainer who, teaches humans to teach dogs. I figured out I was right and Bones Would Rain, helped but it was not facts just thoughts. The theory that dogs are wanting power of the world was holes in it. Where Dominance Theory is loaded with mistakes. It is uncompleted research, research on captive wolves in a non-family mixed member group, research on chickens, which are straight-line hierarchy or pecking order, wrongly applied theory, and data just not followed the right way through to the end. But the main thing I got was Wolves are Canis lupus but Dogs are Canis lupus familiaris. They are different and I am correct in saying humans are not apes but we have similarities. Wolves and dogs not alike and no where near chickens. Dogs are genetically engineered by breeding and evolution to be solitary and human oriented which their brains and behavior patterns show in there response to us and interaction with other dogs. They are no longer pack animals anymore as it was been breed out of then to depend on a pack. Wild dogs tend to stay one to 5 in number in a group and it is for social needs not food needs. Wolves are genetically engineered by evolution to be and need a pack to live and eat and hate humans. Pack wolves in the wild live in a mutually beneficial family group lead by the head parent not an alpha wolf. (A Mom and Dad) They are not as an alpha leader of a mob of unruly brats. Dominance and it use of it is an excuse to not figure out a way to do it better. It is a crutch that was been over used and the skill to learn better under developed cause its easier to stick to the know. Some old trainer got a holed of bad science and ran with it. That was a long time ago as the world changes in ever-other way it is time to change this too. Dominance Theory damages good dogs and good people and a relationship of trust that some dogs die for it use or go insane. The truth is that bits and pieces of the Dominance Theory are right but not as much as most would like to believe. This is fact, it is coming to light and out into common knowledge and it will be changing training but how many more dogs will die over Dominance theory gone wrong. Or live their lives fear or unhappy because someone was to alpha a dog that is confused about of what we as a human are saying to them. Dogs need to learn human language and do it very well against a lot of miss understanding and lack of consistency, in return we should attempt to learn their language and the real way they think. More important dump alpha, dominance in the trash where it belongs. Learn to talk dog. Learn to watch your dog, they never lie they will tell you like it is if you listen without the cloud that a dog is out to rule your house and take over the world. Joy |
