| Potty training hell, switching to indoor, need help!! Our Sweet Josie has been fabulous in every sense except potty training. She is over a year old and here comes northern Indiana Lake effect snow again!!! Last year, we were all psyched to have a new dog and would stand out in blizzards waiting for her to do her numbers. Over the past year we have done the bell, treats, crates etc etc. She just gives us no sign. She has trained us to take her out after meals and drinks. And she will usually go outside and do her numbers. Sometimes quick, sometimes we walk for an hour and nothing. Then of course she comes in and goes. Last winter we did some potty pads on ridiculous days and she does ok with it. Unfortuneatly, she thinks our white mats in our bathroom are potty pads , ugh. Over the last 1.5 years we are probably 98% going outside and 2% potty pads. With winter coming again, we are over the outside thing and want to train her on potty pads in winter and in the summer............we would do pads or outside. I have heard some people doing Litter box training too which sounds interesting. Anyone else been in our predicament and have any success stories? Thanks for any help. |

| Mine are both trained to use a fake grass mat with a potty pad underneath. If one of them had an accident I started wiping a little on the grass mat and letting them sniff the area. I also confined them in the area where the mat was when I couldn't watch them and didn't let them out. When I would catch them using the potty pad, alot of praise and treats. I gradually expanded the area where they could roam around and eventually they have the entire house without accident. It takes a long time to do it right so be patient. I know what you mean about the cold, snowy winters and using the potty pad has it's advantages during rain, sleet and snow. I see my neighbor's little dog outside in thunderstorms, blizzards and sleet storms and am glad mine don't have to go outside to do their business. I'm sure others will come on with more ideas to try.

| Great ideas, someone gave my the fake grass kit and I thought I should stick to outside only but I think I will set up an area in the attatched garage, it has heat to it, and tell Ozzy outside there. Maybe I will get my coat on and the whole works just like we were going outside. Love this forum.
