Hi there just got a 9 week old yorkie and vet told me today he is too young to toilet train , what do you think as hes already used paper 4 times also is 500 grams a average weight .

Rubbish....vets DO come out with some right rubbish at times!!!!!

He's not too young to learn where to go.....just being a baby will mean his bladder cannot hold it in as well as an adult would

The thing to remember with puppies is that they are Puddle Machines

The pee when they wake up....they pee when they've had something to eat or drink and, oh yes, they pee inbetween too

It's just natural baby behaviour.

I've always taken my pups out to the spot I want them to use EVERY HALF HOUR during the day and it's amazing just HOW quickly they learn.....especially once they've used the spot once and there's the scent there

I always use a growbag tray with turf in it (in our courtyard garden) to teach them to empty on grass but I'm sure the same principle would work on pee-pads or even a litter tray

During the night I always set my alarm for every 4 hours and as soon as it goes off I pick puppy up and take her straight to the turf, praise her when she does something and then it's straight back to bed - puppy in her crate and me in my bed

No games or fuss or excitement AT ALL as it's important for puppy to learn that 4am is NOT playtime

The last thing you want is Pup dictating what time you get up

The odd time I've wanted an extra half-hour in bed I'll take Puppy to her patch and then, once she's emptied, I'll take her back to bed WITH me, in my bed. Most puppies, after an initial bouncing on your head in excitement at being on Mummy's bed, soon settle down and go to sleep snuggled up against you

It IS exhausting at times having a new puppy but it soon passes and the groundwork you put in in the early days will reward you a million times over when you have a well-trained dog who can come everywhere with you.

Not too young to start. He won't have the mentality to grasp and retain a lot and certainly not much control but it's a start.

I got Bella at 8 weeks, and she was practically housebroken by the time she was 10 weeks old, so no, it is NOT too early to house train.

Weight question .. if 1000grams equals 1 kilogram. then your puppy only weighs about 1.1 lb

That is a very light weight to release them home. You will need to be very cautious about low blood sugar - hypoglycemia. THey must be fed every 3 hours or 3.5 hours or so to keep their blood sugar level.

Get some nutrical, or in a pinch with low blood sugar you can use, maple syrup, or corn syrup to raise blood sugar up, and then you high tail it to the vet.

I had the exact same experience. Home at 8 weeks and potty trained at 10. I can't say enough about praise (over the top) and treats when he goes on the pad. Four times means he's off to a GREAT start!

Try to stay in an area with him that's close to the potty pad. His bladder is small and once he realizes he has to go he probably won't be able to make it very far. Lexi used to, and still does, run to the potty pad almost full speed to make it there in time.

A few years ago (1970's and earlier) you were told not to bother starting ANY training until your puppy was 6 months old

You can imagine what hooligans must have been around then!!! Thankfully nowadays folk have realised that Puppy's education starts the minute you bring them home....or if you are really lucky the breeder will have started a lot of it already

I'm sure your wee man will soon be an absolute angel

As to weight - best to ask others with more experience on here

I've never had a yorkie pup so got no experience of this aspect (my one yorkie, Scamp, as a child came to us at 6 months old).

I boys were pad trained at eight weeks, so long as the had a pad near by. They spent most of their time in their x-pen so small space. I believe limiting their freedom and stick to one thing either indoor or outdoors. I waited until mine were 16 weeks old before introducing outdoor potty. I did not want to confuse him. He still prefers using the pads but will use it on the patio, he does no like grass when it is damp.
