| Getting stuff out of Emma's Mouth Emma often picks up crap off the ground...rocks, string, paper pieces, anything little. When we try to get it out she bites really hard and gets really really REALLY mean...what should we do? I'm afraid to do the "roll on her back and say no like the mother dog" while the stuff is in her mouth...b/c you know she might choke...any idea's?

| A common problem! I refuse to take no for an answer from my little booger. But I have been taking things away from Wosie ever since she was 8 weeks old to prepare for these kind of occasions where I have to do it to keep her safe. Usually I place her on my lap and use both hands to pry her jaws open. When she is on my lap, she cannot back up to get away. I then use the fingers of one hand to carefully scoop out what she has. Sometimes if I can't get it out, I also drop my knees so her head is down, and sometimes gravity will help. Since she has been teething, this has been an all too common exercise!! Just like a kid, she puts EVERYTHING in her mouth! Make sure you check out Doggy Heimlich manuver when you get a chance! I think it is posted on the General Yorkie Discussion thread. I will go fetch it, it's a good review. BRB! OK, here it is! This was posted on Nov 22 by YorkieUSA. That Karen, she ROCKS!! *******The Heimlich Maneuver for Dogs Check for signs of choking: hard coughing, eyes bulging in panic because he can't breathe, and pawing at the mouth. Clear the mouth. If the dog is conscious, pry open the mouth and look inside. Hold one hand over the top of the mouth, using your thumb and forefinger to press against the lips to get the mouth open. Pull the bottom jaw down with your other hand. Use your thumb and first finger to sweep the back of the mouth and pull out the object. Place dog on his side. If you can't see anything, turn him on his side, head lower than his rear. Put something like a pillow under the rear end. Find the bottom of the rib cage, where the ribs meet in the middle (sternum). Then go a few fingers width below, toward the belly. Press in and up. If your dog is small, put one hand at the spot you found, and the other behind the dog's back for support. If your dog is large, use both hands to press in and up. Keep doing it until he expels what he was choking on. Try the next step if this one doesn't work. Do artificial respiration, if necessary. If he's unconscious, keep him on his side, head lower than the rear. Extend the head gently up and out. Pull the tongue to the side. Do the compressions from the last step, twice. Then check the mouth for the object. Close the mouth, extend the head up, and give two breaths through the dog's nose until you see the chest rise. Repeat the compressions, the mouth check and the two breaths until the dog is breathing again. Get to the vet ASAP. http://quikonnex.com/channel/item/15757 *************

| No necessarily Putting things in their mouths is what dogs do, lol. But if you are specifically working on a particular thing, like not chewing shoes, you will want to make sure she understands this. However, doing a negative reinforcement (which is what you are asking about) is not nearly as effective as positive reinforcement. If she is chewing shoes and you catch her and say "No shoes" (no yelling, just say firmly) and she stops chewing, say GOOD GIRL!! and give her lots of pats. Immediately give her something good to chew, (nylabone, treat, etc) and tell her again, GOOD GIRL! Positive reinforcment is more fun for both you and the pup. I try to stay away from the word no unless it is in connection with a behavior, like above. Otherwise, I am saying NO all the time, and if they don't connect it, after a while it's not even heard. Last night Wosie was digging on my handmade quilt to make herself more comfortable. She gets absolutely FRENZIED when she does this. I noticed I was saying NO too much, so I clapped my hands and said STOP. When she did, immediately I said OH GOOD GIRL, and petted her. The next time she did it, I just said STOP and she did, and I praised her. Our pups only want to please. Praising tells them we are happy with them, and will change their behavior positively. Try it! It's FUN!

| bunjee likes to stuff all sorts of things in his mouth as well. but he's getting better about listening to me now. i tell him "NO!" or "STOP!" and he'll usually stop what he's doing with the object still in his mouth or drop it altogether. if he still has it in his mouth, then i'll tell him to "Drop It" and entice him with a trade, a treat or a toy, and praise him when he drops the foreign object and goes for the treat or toy i'm offering instead. |

| Thirteen - forget the alpha roll! There are 2 things you want to do to deal with this. The first is, like honeybunny said, teach a "drop it" command. Let us know if you need more help with how to teach it. Second, Emma is object guarding. Here is an excellent article on deal to deal with it: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...ctguarding.htm Let us know if you need more help! |

| We do the bait & switch at our house. Logan has this lovely habit of swallowing stuff if he thinks were gonna take it away. So trying to take it away is hard because he'll run from us and try and chew it up and swallow it. So if it's something that could hurt him we just say "treat" and he drops it and takes off running for the kitchen. This maneuver may make him fat, but at least he won't die from choking. But he is getting much better if we say "not yours" he'll usually drop it now.

| Taffy runs and dives under the couch from me if she has something she isn't suppose to have. I try bribing her with treats but no good. She sticks her head out to check it out and when I get close she disappears again. It has become a game to her to keep things away from me. She takes off like lighting. I temp her out with small peppermint piece of candy. I am also going to have to try the clicker thing. |

| Of course, "drop it"... I guess I should have said to say Drop It first, that's what we do. I was more concerned on the fact that your babe is growling and biting at you when you try to take things, and I concentrated on you getting things away. First thing is to try to get them to drop it on their own. Other folks are giving you great advice! Good luck!
