| Biting/Nipping Little Jack loves to bite and nibble here and there....especially when excited. He doesn't do it much with me, as I have started blowing in his face when he bites and telling him a stern, "No!" Do you all have any tips on progression with this? He is only 10 weeks...so he's a baby and doing what babies do..but I definitely don't want it to be something that sticks with him. We have a few bones and plenty of toys for him to chew on, however when he gets attention, he loves to mix his kisses with nibbles lol

| Rufus does the same! It is getting better though..every time I pet him or play with him, he turns and tries to bite or nib so I just tell him "No" and stop petting or playing. The he realizes that if he want me to continue he has to stop so he starts licking instead

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This is one of the reasons that the YTCA recommends pups stay with their mom a MINIUM of 12 weeks, the mom teaches inhibition of the biting reflex. Since his birth mother couldn't teach him, you as his new mom will have to teach it. Don't forget those gums of his hurt and he does need chewing sticks and toys. Some people say if he bites you, let out a yelp, set him down and give him a chewing stick/toy. It's probably best to always have some sort of thing for him to chew on when you pick him up. Something like this will a gel you can freeze works well. Amazon.com: Dog Toy Pet Stages Cool Teething...

Another is to instantly stand up and turn away from the dog the moment he bites hard. Some stand up and leave the room. Others immediately turn their back on the dog. Still others will push their finger or hand being bitten back against/into the mouth and leave it there, gently pushing the finger/hand further back so he can't get his mouth away quickly. That takes his control away and dogs really dislike that and they get the message quickly. Being puppies, they tend to forget over and over but with repetition of whatever method you use for correction, in time they learn to stop inappropriate biting.

| He's learning. He only had one incident today with nipping. He knows that he doesn't get any praise for his biting like he does when he gives kisses or cuddles. I've also learned that while starting his obedience training, his biting has decreased a lot. Hes a smart boy!

| I just got an e-mail from this thread about someone posting something really horrible but I don't see it. Was it deleted? This was written "I'd smack the little rat real hard if he bit me, especially if it dared bite one of my precious children, id take him to the animal shelter to be put to sleep. "
