| House training / crate training It's been 3 weeks and Darla will still not go in her crate. So at night she sleeps with me or on her bed on the floor next to me. She will get up quietly in the night and go pee or poo in the hallway or my sons room. She's confined during my work week in the bathroom were she does use the pad ( only if I pck up my bath mats ) but during the night or day when she's out she will by ass the pad and go we're she pleases. This s causing huge issues here at home especially when she pees right were my littlest is playing her pooping once or twice in the middle of the night is crazy not sure what to do especially since she still will not go in the crate |

| I would put her crate next to your bed. Put some really nice treats in there and put her in and out at few minute intervals. Only give her treats when she is in the crate. Make it cozy. I did that with Jess. I put one of my shirts I had slept in there with her. I did it differently than some as I bought a medium size crate that had enough room for a bed and pee pad. (Im not one to get up in the middle of the night every couple hours and I was indoor training her anyway. I hung a water bottle on the side ) Occasionally she would pee in her bed but it got less and less. I left a night light on so she would be able to see the pad..it was either pee on the pad or her bed. She finally figured out sleeping in pee was not so much fun... she now sleeps in my daughters room but still in her crate. If you have young ones like I do its impossible to leave the dog unattended at night to roam as my kids leave stuff on the floor (littlest pet shops for example) and I dont want trips to the er vet to find the pet shop picnic table lodged in her throat. She has not had an accident outside the crate in months! We still give her a treat if we see her go on the pad.. Last edited by kimp5; 04-28-2013 at 04:25 AM. |

At night, I keep her in her crate on a nightstand right by the bed so she can see me sleeping. The first two weeks, I set an alarm for 2 AM so I could get up and take her out to potty. After that, I would rely on her to bark in the night to let me know when she needed to potty. She only had one accident inside her crate when I didn't hear her bark in the night . She still needs to go once in the night, but she's only 12 weeks old, and I expect that eventually she will be able to hold it all night. Now, if you don't have someone around 24 hours to keep an eye on your Yorkie, you will have to modify the procedure, such as putting her in a crate that is big enough for a bed area and a potty pad, and pray that she learns to use the pad and not wet her bed. Or use a larger pen with a pad in one corner and a sleeping area in another corner. If she's using the pad properly during the day when you put her in the bathroom, she's doing great, and you just need to get her to learn to potty in the correct area the rest of the time. The key is confinement and showing her who is the boss. If she barks hysterically and continuously when she is crated, you will have to train her to be accustomed to being crated, such as slowly increasing the time she is crated in your presence and praising and treating her lavishly, but if you're going to crate train her, then by golly she is going to have to get accustomed to being in the crate.

| Darla in the crate is a cry whine and she scratches and literally throws herself into the sides as if she's thrashing around. She doesn't stop after a few mins she will continue for an hour or more. She will go on the pad in the bathroom but only the one by the door I guess i shouldn't complain. I have her little carrier she came with in the bathroom with her with a blanket inside and she only will go in it quietly if I'm mad at her and trying to get her to use the pad when I know she has to go but she won't because I caught her getting ready to start on my floor. I don't have to worry about small toys on the floor at night as my special needs guy we cannot have that stuff in our home so that makes it easy. I also put up her water about 7 or 8. She doesn't have much kibble left from her free feed during the day. |

| It still sounds like she thinks the crate is a bad place. You need to make it a wonderful plac. Put in treats..one at a time and let her go in there....and out and in for a treat.keep doing it and eventually close the door but dont lock it. keep up the treats |

| To get our puppies to like their crate, we always threw in a treat every time we walked by it or thought about it. They all loved their crates.

This is great advice! You must show her who's boss. I'm sorry but you can't spoil ur dog when she's in the training stages. I'm mean u can w/toys, beds, treats etc. But not with giving in every time she cries, which of course she's going to when u first put her in the crate. Bella cried for two nights nonstop, loud howls..she destroyed her cage. But I didn't care, she needed to be trained. Eventually she grew to love her crate, goes in & out as she pleases. I did constantly put treats & new toys to occupy her, so this helped I'm sure. If you don't do this now, ur going to have problems later on.
