Help! I feel totally defeated, frustrated, lost

Oh, my...I know that African grays are incredibly smart but I laughed out loud at your post. I could just see my little one running to the door and waiting on someone to open it with the parrot saying "do you need to potty" and then giggling to himself-if parrots giggle...

I can also understand marking over the previous dog(s). My original two dogs were 120% trustworthy, but when I moved into this house, where another dog had lived, they peed, pooped and puked in every room of the house. Things eventually went back to normal, but oh, what a crazy ride that was.

Sounds like he doesn't mind the belly bands and they don't irritate him, so that's good.

No, he didn't start peeing whenever my husband leaves the house. Sorry if I confused you. Toby used to have separation anxiety but that was over two years ago. He does fine now. Today was an awesome day! I don't know when he did it but sometime during the night or early this morning he peed on the pee pad which is inches from the new couch. And he hasn't used the pad after that (I always put a new one down whenever I see he's peed on it as he won't use the pad more than once or twice. We got 12" of snow today so it has been a snuggly lazy day and he has been soooooo snuggly with me all day. Tomorrow will be the real test when I go back to work. I watch these dogs like a hawk and my husband doesn't and I'm the disciplinarian, my husband isn't. Belly bands don't bother him a bit but I only keep one on him when absolutely necessary. I had never heard of belly bands and his foster mom introduced me to them. We don't like to use them unless we absolutely have to. Just don't like to take any chances whenever we aren't at home.

Maybe he read your previous posts like my Mozzi did and decided he better clean up his act a bit. LOL. They ARE great little snugglers. I'm so glad he used the pee pad. Furniture is not cheap. I've thrown out several pieces because of dogs. I now have a very cheap leather sofa from Big Lots, of all places. I couldn't be happier. I constantly wipe it down w/disinfectant or pet stain remover. It gets piddled on, slobbered on, covered w/dog hair, spotted w/intact male juices (Ick!), but I never sweat it. I just wipe it down and it looks great. Cushions are shot, but it still looks good and DOESN'T SMELL. When it's finally had it, I'll buy another. One less thing to stress about and it keeps me from resenting my babies.

After being able to vent on this forum and get so much advice and support I was able to mellow out and of course he is now behaving so much better. As a groomer, I know full well that dogs react to our energy. I know what to do, I just got totally overwhelmed. Sounds like you've got your situation under control. You know your guy really well. Trial and error, new ideas, support from others. That's how I've solved my dog challenges over the years. Sounds like you are doing the same. With that record snowfall, maybe you'll have a snow day tomorrow and can do more snuggling!

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Well it has been a week and one day since the new furniture arrived and we are PEE FREE !! I will never know if it was the new furniture or his UTI clearing up because they both happened at the same time. He isn't even peeing on the old couch that is in the living room where he has access. My guess is it was getting his UTI cleared up. He has been telling me every time he needs to go out (of course he gets a frozen green bean every time he potties outside from me!) And he gets lots of praise. He's definitely more snuggly with me....not sure if it's the new furniture or he loves me for getting his UTI cleared up. We have another week of medicine and back to the vet for an "all clear" with a final urine test.

Tonight I was out in the garage and when I came in he ran past me from the living room and I thought "uh oh" and turned on the light and he had pooped on the rug. So of course I had to scold him and tell him "potty outside" and let's go outside. He KNEW he did something wrong because he never runs past me. LOL So all is good and he has made history in this house!

The record snow was not much fun and no snow day for me. The road crews did an awesome job of clearing the roads darn it. But it took a long time to melt and the Tobster got a shower tonight now that it is finally drying up.

We bought our dining room set (which Toby decided to chew on when we first got him over four years ago) at Big Lots and it is solid oak and it was the nicest dining room set until the dogs got a hold of the chair legs. Toby had also marked it quite often when he first came to us and like you, I clean up and move on. And no smell! He's not peeing on anything in the house, not even the other dog's food bowl.

I hope your progress continues and would love to hear about it now and then.
