| Keeping the pup away from the cat?? So I have a ten year old kitty at home, she is very antisocial when it comes to other ppl and animals. My 5 month old Yorkie Winnie, just wants to play with her the second she sees her, but Zoe (the cat) just wants to be left alone and hisses at her and tries to hit her when she comes close. Any ideas on how to keep the puppy away from the cat, right now i have a gate up so the pup can't get by but that also stops the cat from coming to cuddle with me and she is starting to get very lonely. |

| Awkward one, isn't it?! My daughter was having the same problem. She rescued a Labradoodle - and already had 2 established Persian (house) cats at her house. For the first couple of weeks, she kept them apart - more or less. She too had a baby gate so the cats could come and go into 'their' room. Slightly more awkward though, with a Yorkie! She also has one of those very high cat climbing tree/playing thingys, so that they could sit up on their high perch, and watch the proceedings down below. It reached a point though when she thought I've just got to give it a real go of them all being together. The cats actually lashed out at the dog aaargh! I think her dog was quite gobsmacked, and sat for a while in amazement! Do you know, ever since then the new pecking order has been established? They've all reached an even level - usually with everyone ignoring one another - but if her dog gets a bit nutty - one quick swipe from a passing cat and normal service is resumed! I do hope it works out well for you - and quickly! Good luck! Sally + Harry x |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I usually find that a good swat from the cat on the dogs nose usually ends the chasing. LOL They learn pretty quickly after that.

| That is what i'm thinking of doing too, but i'm afraid the dog might end up with a claw in the eye or something as the cat is not declawed.. I do cut her nails down but i'm worried of ending up with a blind puppy I guess i'll just have to give it a go one of these days and make sure i can watch them carfully. Its been nearly a month now and the poor cat barely makes it ouf of the bedroom. Thanx for the advice! I hope it works! ) |

| I had two cats when I brought home my schnauzer puppy. It only takes a few times for them to learn how to coexist. At first the cats would just swipe enough, not to do damage but to let her know. Then before long, I would come home to see everyone curled up together.
