Yorkie Yakker | Thanks for the much needed info. My Sammy is almost 4 months old and he has started the habit of barking for attention or to have you play with him. He is learning everything I ask of him quite quickly but I was not sure about the barking training. I will start this training asap. |

| I see that a couple of other people are having trouble with this too. Any ideas for barking in the crate? He does it for a while right after I put him in. I've been going over and saying "Enough" which will stop him momentarily but he goes right back to it. I also hear him when we're leaving the house and coming back in. At night he has it down to about 5 minutes of throwing a fit and then goes to sleep for the night. I almost feel like going over to the crate every time is giving him the attention he is begging for but I'm not sure what else to do. Thoughts?? |

Yorkie Yakker | I read something on this site about saying "enough" and if it continues use a spray bottle. It seems to work. My Sammy is pretty good in the crate for now but I can see his personality starting to come out. Although I work from home most of the day I will put him in his crate with the door closed (away from his big brother the boxer) for a short time with toys food and water. |

| I am a bad mommy.....I have allowed the barking to get completely out of hand. I have printed your instructions, Teresa, and am going to get this under control!!! I thought it was so cute they would run to me, barking, to tell me about EVERYTHING..... the UPS man, the squirrel in the back yard, my son coming up the driveway, and of course, all excited first thing in the morning, soooooo happy we are all awake and ready to eat breakfast! Lets all "talk" about it!!!! But it is getting to be tooooo much, and they are teaching each other when to bark! |

| I ended up getting the bark repeller that was mentioned earlier in this thread and it really works. I only had to use it one day and now he obeys "quiet" on the first attempt. Thanks for that suggestion! |

| Teresa, Thank you so much for all the excellent free training tips you offer to all of us. My dog goes nuts when he sees a dog on TV. He has learned all the commercial music and comes*running to the TV when he hears a tune associated with a commercial that a dog is in. He can be sound asleep under the covers and when he hears that tune he is scrambling like his butt is on fire to see the TV so he can bark. He has taught one of the other dogs to join him in barking at dogs on the TV. Lately I think they have managed to work a dog into every commercial on TV and then to hear 2 dogs going off barking drives me nuts. I can't wait to see if he is smart enough to learn your training method. Again, thanks you are such an asset to this forum and I appreciate all the time you devote to training us! Jackie |

| My pup is about 4 months old and she is guilty of barking. Whenever I am not in the room with her she starts scratching the door/gate like crazy and barking very loudly. Also, when I am on my bed and she is on the floor she starts barking for me to pick her up. After I give in and attempt to get her on the bed she runs away from me! After I give up on chasing her in circles and I sit up on my bed she starts jumping up and barking again to come back up. I don't know what to do in this situation. I literally spent a good 15 minutes trying to chase her around to get her on the bed and to stop the barking. She also nips, growls a lot. Is this a normal puppy phase and will she grow out of it? I don't want her to become spoiled as an adult and think this is acceptable.

Stopping the barking won't stop the excess energy. All I know to suggest is to increase its level of exercise. A tired dog is a good dog. Maybe take longer walks. Another thing that worked for me was to develop a routine for play/exercise time. Like a walk at a certain time in the morning and another at night. Play time an hour after dinner. If the dog knows exercise time is coming, it's more likely to chill at other times. As for running away from you, your dog is teaching YOU a game. It found its own way to burn off the energy. When that happens to me, I take back control of the game by deciding what we play. Instead of catch me if you can, I pull out a squeaky toy and play tug of war. At least then I can catch them. The goal is to give your dog fewer reasons to bark to get entertainment.

| I agree with the above post about exercise. These little dogs have a lot of energy. I get kind of upset when I hear people on TV say that small dogs are good for apartment dwellers because they don't need much exercise. They do need exercise and they love to run and play. A couple of good brisk walks a day and some games of fetch keep Gracie at a good activity level. She is prone to bark when she wants something but she also knows what "no" means. Teaching basic commands like "no", sit, stay, come will also make your life much easier. Your dog will know who is boss and what to do when you say something. Contrary to popular opinion dogs do not automatically understand everything you say. Once you teach them some obedience commands they start to understand what is expected of them and it makes things much easier on everyone. |
