| Please do read Cesar Millan's books he has many effective ways to deal with common problems. I do think dogs understand 'time out' in a way. They are social beings and hate being away from the pack. When Zacky & Rubin got too aggressive with each other, I put one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom for a few min.s It did not take them long to understand when I said Enough, they had to stop the rough housing. I Never use their crate as a time out place. I use the word OFF when I don't want my dog on something. A very young puppy will think you are playing if you push him off or pat at his face. Give the word OFF, firmly (not loudly)and tap the floor with your foot. If she gets down pet, praise good girl and tiny rice size treat. If she doesn't get off, you can use a spray bottle of water, say OFF firmly, wait 10 seconds then mist with water. As soon as all four feet are on the floor, praise, and pet. (Some people think water misting is mean, I think it is a very effective way to train young puppies.) If your puppy knows Sit you may use that instead of Off and pet, praise, treat when she stops jumping and sits. Another alterative is to say OFF wait 10 seconds then gently pull them off by their halter from behind. PULL, DO NOT PUSH. Never pull them off by a collar this can injure their neck. Hope this helps. |

Of course, there are some that will actually chase the stream. I will say that the spray has worked with most of mine. I am just horribly inconsistent using it and that is not good in training. They take full advantage. My son teases me all of the time saying "you just think you are in charge in your home".

| I also believe that dogs understand the "time out" concept. When Max does something he knows he shouldn't I can put him in time out as a consequence or he goes straight to his kennel by himself until I bring him out. I've also tried a water bottle but only wind up with bad wet dogs

Thor's Human Donating Member | Thor always "asks" before he gets on the couch. He's hilarious. He stands with his front paws on the couch, and he shuffles right to left and back and again, without looking at you. It's like he's saying, "oh, that looks like a nice place to sit. Oh wait, this place next to it looks nice too. But the first place, that could be good. Or the second place. Or further over?" Then when you pat the couch, he jumps up.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Also, not to speak for Brit, but I think she was talking about puppies and long time-outs. No dog is going to remember why he's in time out after more than a few minutes. Puppies have an even shorter attention span. I've read that if you don't act within a few seconds of a puppy's behavior, they won't get it.

| Water doesn't work for Ellie very well either. All I have to do is show Rylee the bottle and he gets in line quickly. I don't even have to do it in his face. He just hates it. Time outs have worked for Ellie, but I don't use crates for it. When Rylee is driving me crazy, but tell him no, then I pleasantly take him to his crate for a nap.

| Well, this doesn't have to do with housebreaking issues - but I remember when we first brought Lucy home - Ringo would growl at her if he was on my lap; like he was guarding me. The vet said this would impact their relationship and whenever Ringo did that - he need to 'go away for a little while". Kinda like a time out. We would put him in another room for 5-10 minutes while we played on. He caught on pretty quickly. Never tried it in terms of potty training though.

| OH MY.... I REALLY never knew what i was getting myself into with this little guy LOL but trust me I love him and REFUSE to give up!!! So last night he kept jumping up against the couch and I decided to give him a time out... 2 min's in the kennel and I walked out of the room as soon as I sat down I heard screams from him I have yet to hear go running into the dining room and he has his lower jaw stuck in the side and is FREAKING OUT SO BAD that he has wet himself... took me a good 5 mins to calm him down and get him unstuck which of course I was worried about his jaw being hurt so I offered him his favorite a piece of dried sweet potato which he chewed on just fine but oh my it was like I had another puppy... no biting no jumping just wanted to cuddle and snuggle all calm. So I am guessing his jaw is fine and who knows maybe I will get lucky and this scared him so bad he will not jump... crossing my fingers on that one lol |

Lucy would always get her collar stuck in her mouth (?). She would try to chew on it - somehow get her cute little collar stuck in her mouth. End result - no more collar. She's quite successful.
