You are using a desk bell! I had a hanging "cow bell" I think they are called like the kind you have at Christmas for the kids hanging on the doors to catch Santa...hmmmm I don't think Princess could eat one of those! Hm I was just looking at the Lentek PP10 Pet Chime - Doorbell for Pets, but I'm liking the classic desk bell you have there a lil better seems more...durable.

It's the Tell Bell. The ringing portion has a larger circumference so that the dogs don't have to fumble trying to ring it. I also love it because it's portable. My vet has a lodging center, so when I need to kennel them I let them bring their bells

It makes the vets and staff crazy but I know they are getting plenty of extra attention. I've also brought it to my parent's home in Florida when Cooper and I visited. I put it right next to the door and he used it immediately. Here: Tell Bell - Kelston Products

Thanks for the compliment. I have 2 boys, Cooper and Max. Cooper is the one with the huge grin. Max is the one in the bell photo.

He may be "treat" trained. He knows if he rings the bell and "performs" he gets a treat.
Sometimes after one of ours uses the doggie door and get a treat for going potty --- the others quickly run out the door and immediately right back in...and get in line for a treat...for going outside. Yup, they're smart...they did in fact "go outside" even if they didn't potty...they went outside and think they get a treat for it.

My dogs are bell trained. I can understand how frustrating it can be in the beginning. Now, mine will ring it once, then sit patiently until I come open the door so it's not as annoying as it was in the beginning. Since mine are the hanging kind, I used to just pull them up when they were as much a toy as they were a training aid. I think that helped them learn to only ring it when they meant business.

Well I've had the bells up for a couple weeks now. With little success. After reading this, I'm taking them down. Kody has just begun to sometimes tell us by barking and staring us in the face. I'm hoping he will continue. Otherwise, we were just taking him out every 1.5hr. and of course after waking and naps and meals.

We need a signal.

I have to say, that I have never used a bell, and Teddie, 1 yr old, does me the same way. She will come in from outside potting, and I will sit down and she will run back to the door, like she has to pottie again. I don't think it has any thing to do with the bell or what ever your using, I think these dogs are just smart and like to go outside and play. Teddie loves it outside. I do want to try the bell thing though. It isn't like she is 100% house trained any way, so what do I have to loose?
