Question about crate training? I have just saved a yorkie from a bad situation. We found out that she has a uti. She is currently on antibiotics for 10days. Today is day 4. I know to crate train they need room just to turn around and laydown. I have been having her in a larger crate because she urinates every few minutes. They told me she was housetrained but I do not know since she has the infection. I guess Im wondering if I am going to be making it harder for her to learn since she is pottying in a crate? I do take her out also. I was also wondering does anyone have any idea of when I should start seeing an improvement with her frequent urination? Thanks Misty

I've never had to deal with a UTI...I hope she feels better soon. I do know about crate training though and, I'm with you on this part, it does seem a bit unfair to her at this particular time since she is going to often. Do you have a puppy playpen or x-pen? If not, maybe you could find one so she has a little more room to move...there would be room for her bed, food & water, toys and a potty pad. Then when the UTI is cleared up you would see if she's really potty trained and if not then use the crate method when she has a better chance at success. Good luck and I do hope she feels better soon.

Thank you. I am also wondering if a diaper would be good for her or would it aggravate the condition more? When she is out she is peeing every few seconds. She is even peeing on her bed. I just feel so sorry for her.

Yes, you could use the little sassy pants with a pad inside but keep an eye on her because they can irritate their private area. I would clean her with a warm cloth each time I changed the pad. When I used panties for my girls I used Poise pads, they hold quite a bit, they never leaked and they kept the moisture and wetness away from their skin. My girls pee'd every few minutes right after they were spayed...I felt so bad for them.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't like the diaper idea, and I think it gets them use to being in their own pee. After four days of antibiotics, she should have the bladder infection more controlled than that. I don't know if they did a culture, many doctors don't, they just give a generic antibiotic, that treats the common infections, but I'd tell the vet, he may need to prescribe another antibiotic, or do a culture. I would have a bed with lots of pad, or towels, and change them frequently, she should always be able to find a dry spot to lie. You can begin house breaking when the infection clears up. We kept Joey in an x-pen with a bed, and pee pad, and he pretty much house trained himself. Overnight we used the crate.

I think I will call the vet tomorrow. My sister is the one that took her to the vet because she originally was suppose to be her dog. My sister did take a sample of her urine with her. The vet prescribed cindamycin. The vet told my sister that it was so bad it almost was at the point of being a kidney infection. I just hope it isnt something more serious.
