Default How long did it take to potty train 100%

How long did it take you to potty train your yorkie with no accidents?
I have consistently been working 2 1/2 months now and have not had a lot of luck with my 5 1/2 month old pup. Am I expecting too much too soon?

Bridget is just over 6 months - and I've had her for around 3 months. I have to say she is 95% trained (we use peepads, which she sometimes destroys, but still uses what is left of them - even if they're upside down). Except for a little reminder while we're playing she goes to her room and goes on her own. But she's not 100% yet!!! It was like one day a little light bulb went off in her head. One morning she came over and pee'd by my foot, and that was the last time - not sure why but she just started using the pads after that! Go figure!!! Good luck!

WOW, that is encouraging. 2.5 yrs. About the time I think we are ahead of the game Penny, almost 8 months, pees on the carpet, like this morning. She still rings the bell to let us know she has to go. However; you better be there when she has to go or she goes. Know what I mean? And, she is trained for our house not someone else's house. She does not know where the front door is at my daughters.

i'd say Morgan was 100% potty trained at 1 1/2. she was 95% potty trained by 6 months but every so often would have an accident in the house if i let her have free reign of half the house when i was out. By 1 1/2 years old she pretty much would hold it as long as needed unless she was sick and couldn't help it. she's 4 now and still 100%

I would also say Jackson was probably around 95% potty trained by
6 months. Now at 1.5 years old, I call him 99.9% potty trained!
He still has never once had an accident while no one is home and
has had free roam since 5 months old.

My first dog(maltese/shih tzu) took almost 2 years, and my yorkie is now 8 months old and we're still working at it, had a little set back with UTI. It's my fault though, I don't have the heart to crate train. Thank goodness I have no carpet in my house, so it's not too stressful.

I would say about 14 months. Daisy had problems going potty and poop in her crate. As soon as I gave her more freedom and started letting her out of the crate when I was gone for a short time she quit pottying in the house. I think she was resentful of being in the crate while we were waiting for her to be potty trained. Once she got it, she was great about not going inside. I don't know if this is unusual but letting her have more freedom worked for us.

You guys are gonna hate me, but it only took me about two months to fully train Uni. *ducks!* I will say I'm sure it had something to do with me being able to take her to work with me and being with her literally 24/7. During the night, we kept her collar and bell on. As soon as I heard her bell jingle, I would take her into the bathtub (yes the tub) and wait for her to go, even if it took 45 mins, and even if it was 4 am. Needless to say, a lot of sleepness nights for months. She learned real fast that she would not and could not get out until she peed. Then we graduated to the litter pan with the pads inside. We had a pan in every bathroom, and even in other peoples homes she goes in the bathroom (I don't count that as an accident, she knows she needs to go to the bathroom in the bathroom.) I have not had to worry about Uni for years now. Katie on the other hand, I can't leave her alone for 5 seconds.

Oh, you don't know how good it is to hear that! My almost 2 yr. old two girls are pretty much there, but my lil 1 yr. old girls are not quite, and maybe only 90-95%, and it's my fault. There are times I wish I would have crate trained the younger 2, but with multiple dogs running around, I probably gave them more freedom than they were ready for.

So like ArmaniMan.... ummm I'll let you know when we are finished too

Echoing above posters! Chloe just turned 1 year last month and she's probably 98% trained. Our biggest problem is that I can not get her to understand that she needs to tell me that she needs to go!! As long as I remember to take her at set times during the day, she does great. But if I get busy and forget about her....right in my floor! Luckily, she doesn't try to hide her accidents so I always find them very quickly and can get it cleaned up. However, when we go to my parents' house to visit, it's like a whole different dog. Instead of being able to wait four or five hours between potty trips, it's more like 2.5 or 3 hours or she goes in the house! Silly animal...just trying to make me look bad in front of my momma!!! :P

Now, my previous dog...a male poodle, he was a breeze to potty train. Within two weeks, he was at 100% and even when he was sick he'd try his very best to let me know in time to make it outside. Wish they were all so easy....

Haha... same here basically... My older one is pretty good... like probably 90% or so... but the younger one... she got more freedom, much earlier because she always wanted to be with her brother... so she is just so/so... if the pad is there and its convenient to go on it, she will... if its not so convenient to find the pad she probably wont

I consider 100% where they wont go on the floor anywhere, no matter what, ever... unless they are very very sick... I had a poodle like this... I dont ever expect one of my yorkies to be like that.... this is why god made yorkies soo darn cute

I believe this had a lot to do with my potty training success too. My boys are rarely out of sight of their humans.

Maxman took to the pads immediately when he came home at about 12 weeks old. Teddy was outdoor trained by our breeder at 8 months. It took about 2 weeks to switch him to pads.

I wrote on the other potty training thread that HarleyHoo had similar success with her little girl.

By 6 months, the only "accidents" Jezebel had were when she went to the paper and didn't quite get her back end over the paper. If I happen to catch her doing that, I still praise her profusely, because she did stop whatever she was doing, go into another room, and squat over the paper. She did what she was supposed to do, and doesn't (or won't ever) have the ability to know that her back end wasn't quite in the right spot. Fussing at her in that situation would only confuse her and give her the idea that she wasn't supposed to be going on the pee pad.

Great job Jezebel!

Praise is another key ingredient for success. Never stop praising.
