Roxie scratches at the front door when she wants to go out or when she wants our attention. I really want this to stop. She has scratched the paint off the door and the surrounding molding!

She was scratching at the basement door as well, but we stopped that by spritzing her with a water bottle. We only had to do it once to stop the behavior.

The problem is that the front door is a greater distance away from the living room, where we usually are. By the time we get to her with the spray bottle, she is already running away from the door. I figure if we spritz her then, she won't know what she is being spritzed for, and the scratching won't stop.

Any ideas on how else to handle this?

I don't have any advice for you, but Chase does the same thing! We never tried the water bottle thing, I don't think it would matter since as soon as one of us gets up to get him, he is moving away from the door.
Hopefully someone else has advice

Did you see the thread about the Bark Repeller? I know it would work on this behavior as well. It works up to 20 feet way and it has been getting some rave reviews!
