| Retraining-Is it Possible? Hello All, My little one has been with me since he was two months. He will be 8 months this coming Saturday. Unfortunately from the begining I was terrible about training. I only wanted to hold, and play with Dolce. However he is terribly disobedient and does whatever he wants when he wants. My heart is awfully weak when it comes to that cute face of his, but I want to put my foot down and establish whos the boss! I still have his crate and the clicker training thing and I would like to get feedback on how to go about the retraining process. He is trained to the wee wee pads, but I would like to get him off of those and used to going outside. Thanks In Advance~ |

| Try moving the pee pads closer each day to the door and then eventually outside. |

| Oh, wow! You're brave. Are you certain you want to brave a Brooklyn winter with him?

| @ YorkieUSA I want his to get used to the idea. He has winter boots and plenty of sweaters and coats. He wont be out long, but he needs to get used to going out. |

| You may want to try looking into local training classes. We took our bloodhound to a class that our local park and rec offered and it was great. It was a basic class and they had all different ages of dogs in there as well as different obedient levels. Its a little harder to feel discouraged about your dog not laying down when you tell it to when there are four other dogs that won't do it either, so you don't seem to give up as easlily. Oh and the class was great for us because it made us practice with the dog during the week, we didn't want to look stupid at class so we did your homework. I will say though we only had one small dog in the class so that may scare some people but he was the roughest out of the bunch and there were several medium sized dogs. Plus my 80+ lbs bloodhound loves our 4.5 lbs Reagan and is so gentle with her so size doesn't really mean anything.

| I definitely don't think that it's too late to start training your dog to be more obedient! I highly recommend the articles at www.clickersolutions.com If you don't think you can do it on your own, you could either join a class or contact a trainer to give you some one-on-one advice. |

| Clicker solutions also has an email list for added support and motivation. Beware, though, it generates ALOT of email. I also think retraining to potty outside can be done, but will take some time. Take your pup outside when he is likely to need to go. As he's going, give him a cue (I use "go potty") then praise lavishly, throw a party, and reward with a high value treat (I always use people-food for this - a tiny bit of cheese or leftover meat). Repeat, repeat, repeat. He'll eventually get it. |
