Question Ex pin...

currently Yoda sleeps in a crate, that's how I housebroke all of my dog. But now after reading a few things on this site, I was wondering if ex pins do any good? I would still have him in the kennel at night, but while going to work I would but in in an ex pin. the only thing that scares me is that my entire house has hardwood, and pee will probably mess it up.

what are your experiences with ex pins and what did you do to help with the training process?

I think it stands for exercise pen...and can be used for just that. An area that can be fenced off for them to play without getting into anything. I loved it when Winston was a little puppy. I used it to keep him out of areas of the house until he was completely potty trained. I couldn't use it to prevent him from going to the bathroom in the house, where if he was in his crate he new to hold it.

My advice - still use the crate because that helps with the potty training and use the ex pen to keep them out of things or confined to a certain area.

Also, when Winston was a little guy I could put him in the ex pen with a potty pad and get things done around the house. Now that he is almost one we don't really use it anymore because he can roam the whole house.

Hope this helps - good luck!

Troy is kept in an excercise pen during the day when I'm working. It has a make shift floor I made to protect my carpet. It's a woodboard covered in linolium flooring tiles I picked up for 10 bucks.

I like it bc he's puppy pad trained to go there and is trained to go there when I'm at home with no accidents on the floor anywhere else. He's safe there and it easy to maintain

I love our ex pen. It has worked for us since our schedule was so chaotic. I didn't have to worry if I had to work a little later than usual. I used to have his crate, food/water, pee pad in there. Now that they are older and trained, I still have their pee pad, crate and beds and blankies in there. There food and water are in the kitchen. The are loose on the first floor during the day but when we got night night, they go into their pen.

Capone loves his pen and hates the crate, so I used the pen to potty train him. The whole thing is like his personal area so he never has accidents in his pen.

It's about 30 in by 30 in I believe. Capone is bigger, 10 lbs. But I put his bed and bunch of toys in it so he feels comfy. When he was younger and couldn't hold it as long I put a pee pad in it, but he didn't need it for long. He sleeps in it and he plays in it, it's just like a crate for him.

i was thinking about getting one, just so Yoda doesn't have to be in the crate all day when I am at work

I use a playpen for Bella. Food&water, potty pad and crate fit great and gives her a safe area to play when I am at work.

An ex pen is probally the best way to potty train , at least I think so, you didnt say the age of your pup, but if your working 8 hours it will be impossible for any puppy to hold it that long expecially if you have also kept your pup in a crate all night long!! Attaching an ex pen with a puppy pad , bed and toys will enable your puppy to excersice , play, pee and sleep. You can also just gate them in them in the kitchen or bathroom As for peeing on your hard wood floors you can get a shower curtain liner for 1 dollar at the dollar store and put it under the ex pen.. there are different kids available on line but the one above looks wonderful!!

this is the one that I used

Yoda will be 6 months January 11. And yes I work 8 hours a day. He doesn't go in the kennel though. I wanted to see if I can trust him to stay out for a long time with my other dogs. I have never gone an hour without taking him out so to be honest I don't know if he can make it an entire hour of not... after about 20 minutes I take him out, so like 4 times an hour he is outside to potty

Considering we both work 8 hours a day and can't get home to let a puppy out of a crate, I'm encouraged reading this thread, as we are also training our Chloe in a Xpen. It's large enough that on one end she can eat, sleep, play and on the other is her pee pad.

The verdict is still out, as it's only been 7 days since we've had her, but she's had success the past couple of days and I'm hopeful that this will be the way to go. I keep reading how notoriously difficult Yorkies can be to potty train.

Ex-pens are great! I put ours up in the enlongated way and a plastic runner underneath bc we have wood floor. I got the runner a home depot you know the kind that you use for the hallway of your carpet to prevent tracking in the winter. then we put her bed at one end and food and water at the other and by the door that opens of the ex-pen we put her pee pad. When we go anywhere that is where she goes and she has plenty of room in there.
I have a picture of the set up in my albums under Pixie if you want to check it out. Good luck!!

these are all really great ideas. Yoda does great but it's time to start trusting him, and I think the ex pen in the ony way to go, especially when they atarted "holding" it longer
