Hello...we have had our little Isabella for a year now, she is 4 years old. We adopted her and started her right out crating her at night as she wasn't potty trained when we got her. After a few months of this she started crying in her crate and because it was out of the ordinary I got her out to go out to the bathroom but of course started a bad habit! Now she doesn't go in the crate at all anymore and goes to sleep without a problem in bed with us. The problem is that she wakes up in the night and whines until I get up. She doesn't want to go outside though she usually wants me to lay on the couch with her! If I do she is fine and goes back to sleep without a problem. If I try to ignore her though she pesters and whines and wakes up my kids or husband...ugh. Any advice on how to rectify the situation? I'm sick of getting up every night and going to the couch just so we can get some sleep. I think we have just formed a bad habit and I don't know how to nip it.

Hi, I feel your pain. I had a sick pom who had cushing's disease and I had to get up every couple hours at night to feed her and let her out. Sadly she passed in February, but now my almost 4 year old Pixie is getting me up every 1 1/2 hours to eat. She is so persistant that I tried ignoring her for 3 hours the other night and she never stopped running back and forth on the bed, kicking her back feet and barking at me. I tried crating her she screamed so I had to take her out or my husband and dtr would kill me. The past few nights I have used a small spray bottle with a touch of vinegar and the rest water and when she tries to get me up I spray her (a little mist really). Once last night after I sprayer her she went and laid back down for awhile. I will let you know if it ends up working. I just can't get by on getting woken up 4 times a night. I am going to have her blood tested to make sure she doesn't have any medical condition but she is fine all day and evening. I feel so mean spraying her but it doesn't hurt her and I have to break the habit. I hope you get some ideas to try.

Wow that's a tough one. It sounsdsto me like she does not recognize you as the pack leader. Using the spray bottle dsounds like a good idea. I would also start working with her on some obedience during the days so she gets to realize that you are the leader.

I just do a few simple things daily. I set their food down and make them wait until I say OK. I make them sit and wait after I remove the gate from the doorway, untill I tell them it is OK. Just simple things that keeps them reminded that I am in control.

i know it might suck for like a week, but put her where you want her to be at night, crate, bed, wherever. and IGNORE all attempts to bug you or get your attention unless you know 100% that it is potty time. it will wake people up and suck, but if you don't do this she'll never let you sleep again, you have to be firm and put your foot down that you are not giving in to her wishes. and the spray bottle sounds good in case she's really not giving up

Thanks for the suggestions, all the insight is pretty much what I was thinking. She is REALLY spoiled and its my fault! I do need to try to reinforce "who the boss" is...she definitely feels in charge! I've been doing this up all night game for several months now, its like going back 10 years to when my kids were infants! I will try the suggestions and see...she is fine during the day and I really believe it is just a learned behavior that I do have to break now. Unfortunately, no one else wants to deal with being woke up when mom can resolve it by getting up

Room service is ADDICTIVE (for man and beast). It will take you 72 hours to break this habit. Same for infants.

I am a firm believer in getting your pups to understand commands as early as possible.
Whenever it is time for me to retire, I say "Time for nite-nite".
Both of mine, (7yrs, and 7months) know exactly what that means now. They go up and climb in my bed and get settled.
Using consistent commands for as many normal activities as possible will get them trained in no time. Yorkies are very smart and key in on intonational sounds. So essentially the more you use the same vocabulary for commands, the more they will learn.
For now, I would not only use the mister(Patti's suggestion), but also use a command with it, that way she will connect the two, and be able to identify the command so that the mister is no longer needed.
