| Play growl? I'm new to the puppy world. Our little guy likes to play, but I am wondering how do I tell if he is play growling or not? I've read a lot of threads about how puppies can get aggressive, and I just want to head it off before there is a problem. What can I do to keep him from getting aggressive? How do I let him know who is boss? Thanks! |

| Uni play growls also. When she was a pup my bf would make her growl while playing, and his friend said not to do that b/c it will make them aggressive. I don't think that growling while playing is what makes a pup aggressive, I think it's fear. I think like a human bully, they try to show their toughness b/c they are actually afraid of confrontation. That's just what I think though. Anyway, Uni is not aggressive to people or dogs, but she growls a lot when playing. I think they way you can tell the difference is if they show teeth/gums when they are aggressive. When she growls during play, she usually has a toy in her mouth.

| For one the body language is totally differnt. One is relaxed and happy the other is stiff. Mine dog does not growel often so you watch the body and she will stiffen and the lip will tighen and it may even raise and you know she seconds way from unloading a thumping on what ever is making her unhappy. In play with aqa tug toy she growels and sings ans you know as it loose body and it in it she freezes all bets are off she swticjed modes and play time is over. If a dog is groweling in l=play it is ok and it is even ok to growel whe n they are not in play. It is just language and they are just letting you know there is a problem. I rather a dog go grrr stop then not an nail me with a bite. When you stop them from grring then they will go to a bit to ge you to stop as you taught them not to use their voice. JL

| I've notice that when I pick him up when he is playing he will growl at me and bites at me. It is almost like he does not want to stop playing and he is upset with me. Do you think this is just puppy stuff or do you think I should worry? |

| Uni does that too. that's what I think is she wants to keep playing. I think he's just a pup that found his teeth You can tell when they are really PO'd they show their gums, and do a continuous growl, even the eyes look mean. But when they are just playing, it seems like a purr/growl, and the biting is just a quick nip, then a bounce back. Also when they're playing you can see the body movement is bouncy, jumpy, whereas when they are mad or scared the body is very stiff, ears down.

| Yep, Bailey is a play-growler. There's not a mean bone in her body - but she loves to play and growl. She's 2.5 yo and hasn't out-grown it. Hope she never does - I love it.
