| HELP!!!We were doing so good..... I just don't know what to do anymore.. Roxy was doing so good.. I started the book. How to housebreak your dog in 7 Days.. Being that I started Roxy on it late because she was first trained to wee wee pads now she goes outside. Well we are on our 3rd week Monday starting the 4th week. I know that it takes time for her to catch on because she's older and she's use to the wee wee pads.. I thought I was able to trust her because when I'm laying down or in the bathroom getting ready for work, she would come in the bathroom and start whimpering and when I say whats wrong mama she walks to the door. I thought I was able to trust her. So I left her in the kitchen this afternoon. I came home at 12 to walk her and so I wanted to give her the benefit of doubt but when I came home at 430. She had pooped and I guess she tried to clean up after herself that she ate it and smeared it all over my kitchen floor. I just don't know what to do anymore

| I think it is a good that you tried to her more freedom but it sounds like she is not quite ready for it. Don't feel fustrated. Yrkies in general are harder to potty train than some other breed of dogs. Just ask the group. They probably will say the same thing. I would suggest going back to what you were doing and stick with it longer. It sounds like she was doing very good with what you were doing. |

| Every time I thought BAxter was trained - I'd find a surprise some where in the house. Now at 1 1/2 years old, he seems to be perfect! Keep it up. It just takes time and patience. |

| Yeah I'm having patience LOL!! Next week I'm going to try and open up her whole crate and take the divider out. There is only about 3 inches left of divider so I'm going to start is small steps... Hope that helps...

| I would recommend crate training. It really seems to help puppies learn quickly that potty is supposed to happen outside. Hang in there! :-) |

| It's quite an adventure, isn't it? I know there are oodles & oodles of different ways to crate train, but I can share what has worked for me in the past with my dogs and what I'm doing now with Sophie, who is 5 mos. She is either in her crate (for short periods of time), walking with me, playing with me, or in her window seat basket (where she can play with toys and watch the neighborhood out the window) while I work at my home desk next to it. I NEVER let her wander around without me directly watching her. If she starts to get into potty position, I make a little "uh-oh" gasp and scoop her up to take her outside immediately. Then I say "go potty" while she's doing her business and praise her and give her a little treat. If I need to leave, I take her for a good walk so she can do her business, then put her in her crate until I come back. (She has water, a snack, and toys in there.) If I'm taking a bath or cooking dinner, or anything where I can't watch her directly, she's crated. I know some people think it's unkind, but I keep the crate periods brief, and she is so comfortable in her crate that she goes into it when it's open to play with the toys. She also eats her meals in the crate. It's her little "den." I do move it around the house with me so that she can see me and doesn't feel isolated. If you have some other suggestions, I'd love to hear them! This forum is such a great way for us to all share ideas! :-) Hang in there-- hopefully our potty training days will be behind us soon! :-) Last edited by mommyofsophie; 09-09-2009 at 06:33 PM. |

| Feel your pain Hi, We have had Sparkle, six month old Yorkie, for almost 5 weeks and have been diligently following all rules in the "books" and on this site. Crate Training, Playpen, Leash tied to me...etc. I am home most of the day with him and am trying so HARD to get this right. We did really well...9 days accident free and then all of a sudden..wham! He has gone in his crate, in his playpen (today right after I took him outside), on the floor...everything. We are doing the outside method and the only thing I can think is that we have switched from taking him in front of the house to the back of the house. I just can't think of what else has happened???? I am wondering if it is spite for leaving him at all....is that possible? I don't like keeping him cooped up all the time but now am feeling like he has to be in playpen or crate all the time that we are not walking or playing with him. Any help appreciated or just encouragement...smile! |
