I have to go potty!!!! My Maddie is 19 months. She potties outside only. Well, unless you count the accidents inside...., but no pee pads is what I meant. My question is, how do I get her to let me know she needs to go out? We go out the same door always. We take her out every 3 -4 hours and she goes pretty much on command. However, if she has had a lot a water, or has an extra poop to do (usually only poops in the a.m. and after supper), and needs to go, she just goes whereever she feels like it. I do use an enzyme cleaner and she doesn't go to any one particular spot. She will just squat and go, even right in front of me! I've read about the bells, but with the shape of our house, you can't hear the bells from the whole house if I or my girls are in the back portion of the house. I would love to teach her to bark at the door or come to us and bark, but have no idea where to begin????

I had the same problem with Rupert. I knew he didnt know how to tell me he needed to go out side. So I taught him to bark. As well EVERY time I took him outside I made him sit by the door, I said outside then I took him out. Now when he needs to go he sits and stares at me, I will say outside and he will jump at me bounce off bark run to the door. Only draw back is he will do the same thing if he wants to go outside to play also.

I thought about trying that... Maddie definately knows "how" to bark.. ha ha .. she's very good about that when neighbors dare to walk on "her" street in front of our house (working on that too). She doesn't bark at them outside, only when she's inside and they are out. Anyway, sorry I got off subject... my idea was to to Maddie to speak on command and then get her to speak before I open the door to the outside. Does this sound like what you did?

Smokie does not potty inside either. Yes, a couple accidents, but I think I missed him telling me I gotta go. What I have discovered with Smokie is when he needs to go outside, he makes a special effort to get my full attention like jumping in my lap.if its been awhile, He goes out. He tells me - I just need to learn to listen.
