Victoria Stilwell love thread Her summer season is starting! Did anyone else see the first eppy? This woman couple had three dogs, all very overweight and they used a static mat, which I'd never heard of before. Victoria always makes it look so easy. Sigh.... |
haven't seen it, but I love Victoria! Looking forward to it. |
I haven't seen it either and never seen the mat. Did it work? I'm so sad that I missed her on Saturday. Last weekend it was a dog show, so I didn't even try them this weekend :( My teenaged daughter and I LOVE her. I even have her book and wish that I was half the dog trainer she is. I hoped it would help me with Barley's aggressiveness towards other dogs. Seems he's comfortable at home (yeah, since he's a rescue, i'm very pleased with this knowledge) but he's aggressive when out and about (where he's fearful so he lashes out). I need a trainer that follows Victoria's style. Can we just clone her :p |
I saw that yesterday! As you know, I prefer Cesar, lol, but I love Victoria's show too! I saw part of the episode but I had to leave so I DVR'ed it. I've been meaning to watch the whole thing. I had never heard of a static mat before too! I felt bad for the dogs! |
Yes, I saw it. It was pretty good. The one owner was pretty stubborn & determined nothing was going to work. Wondered how Victoria turned her attitude around. I suspect we missed a good scolding from her. : ) I've seen those static mats before, but could never believe they didn't hurt. Sure wish we could see longer versions of these shows. They are sooo abbreviated that we miss a lot. Have to watch them anyway. |
I enjoy Victoria's show's as much as Ceaser's. I will watch for the new season shows. Ceaser used the static mat last Fri night on one of his episodes. First time I ever heard of it. It did the trick on the dog who kept escaping his yard:p I think Victoria uses more treats than Ceaser. You rarely see him with any to entice a dog to do what he want's. I think he's truly one of a kind but I like her too. |
I like watching all the dog training shows but don't seem to get too much tv time lately. I'll have to see if I have that one Tivo'd. I have all her shows recorded but they are usually repeats that I've seen a few times so I just wind up deleting. Looking forward to some new shows! |
Victoria does use more treats as she is to be postive based and therefore should be the opposite of the other fellow that in the TV. There would be no scolding non done by her on or off screeen. Just not the way that she should be working. She makes it look easy as she got the timing and the knowledge that most of us do not have as yet. Including the other fellows on TV.. ie ceaser or brad. I actually like to know what a static mat is. ( I did google it but I am not sure that what came up is that is being talked about) Are they going around zapping dogs on air again? Last time he did that a dog bit its owner and he got repremanded by the organization that governs animals in moveis and TV and told no more. JL |

Static mat is electrical with settings. Victoria jumped when she touched it, said it hurt & mat was set on low. Of course she insisted it no longer be used. |
Yes, I think we meant that Victoria enjoys scolding people. :) It's part of her charm, it's so very English. BTW, you can usually set your Tivo recordings so they get first run only. That's weird that both Cesar and Victoria had an eppy on the static mat, one for, one against. I wonder if that was deliberate? It didn't seem to be working too well for Victoria's dogs (she threw it out). Victoria does use more treats, though she did not in this episode. She used gentle negative reinforcement (removed dog from situation if he barked, stopped walking when he pulled on the leash), and body blocking. Oh, I guess she used some for the Wait command. I also thought it was interesting that she decided not to teach the old dog new tricks! |
I saw that episode too this weekend. Funny she hated using that mat while Ceasar does use it. Two different ways to teach I guess. I go more for Victoria's ways than Millans way. But you have to go with what works for you. If you have a food motivated doggie then treats ar ethe way to go but not all dogs are food motivated.;) Some treats, some praise, some toy.:animal-pa |
I think what the two trainers both have in common is that you have to train the owners as well as the dogs. Most of the time the dogs have the owners trained, that's why they are having the problem. Has anyone seen the episode of South Park where they get Cesar to train Cartman? Pretty much sums it all up. :D |
I love Stillwell! Is Cesar the one on National Geographic Channel? I haven't seen him, I dont get that channel. I watch a few episodes of the new one In the Dog House or something like that and I just hated that guy's techniques. I can't wait to catch Victoria's new episode! |
i like watching Victoria's show as well. I think its because she's English and her ways of dealing with people are different. Its funny. But what she does really works. i did catch a new show the other night with some guy (i guess that's the brad that was mentioned before) and i didn't like him at all. |
I loved that episode (: the static mat was horrible! Those poor doggys :( |

LOVED that episode ! I know I shouldn't, but I DOOOO :D I like watching both Cesar and Victoria. I just wish training my dogs would have been as easy as they make it look ! I think they may have Dr. Doolittle powers and we just don't know it :) I think its amazing the way animals respond to them. |

My comment is that she never scold a dog. As for the static mat I am with her on the use or not using it. JL |

The humans can talk back if ceasers dogs try to talk back they are dominating him and therefore must be punished. Ceasers not nice to the humans either. JL |

Because every episode I've seen he's never gotten in anyone's face, ever. If they have children or babies, he's usually seen holding the newborn baby loving on it or saying how nice the kids are. He hugs every single person on the show usually. He's made a lot of kids dreams come true. I remember one episode in particular from the Make-A-Wish foundation and she wanted to be "Dog Whisperer" and he brought her to his center, his very first TV episode with Nunu, the owner of Nunu now has a job at the dog psychology center. I've never seen anywhere with him being mean to a human, so if you could lead me to a video clip, that'd be great. |
I just wanted to apologize for even responding to YorkieMother. I didn't even know what thread I was in.... This is a VICTORIA STILLWELL love thread. WHY did you even just bring up Cesar's name? |
I am a Victoria fan. Her methods are positive , and I believe her experience and knowledge of dog training is refreshing . She teaches dog owners propper training stratigies , and then follows up with them. SOmetimes, the owners do become defensive , and it is the husbands that I have seen who have become like that towards Victoria. Victoria, stands her ground, and just tells it like it is, they called her to help , then give her attitude, sometimes the husband and wife are having dog disagreements allready, long before Victoria even showed up. I saw one eposoide where they had I believe 5 pugs , and they all ate each others poop . It was so gross, and the husband was very rude towards Victoria, she even walked out. That had to of been one of the most intense shows on It's Me or the dog. I did miss the first summer show :( |

i like watching Victoria get in people's faces and having it actually be effective. I have a hard time holding my temper and when I get upset my words don't come out right and everything just turns into a big yellfest. |
I can see why some find VS bitchy, because, well, she IS bitchy (isn't that an alternate spelling for "British"? jk!). One of my favorite episodes is "It's Me or the Fat Dog". She starts off the show by saying that she is disgusted by both underweight and overweight dogs. I know it's not good for pets to be overweight, but hey, if they are fat, at least they are comfortable. Neither are good, but it's one of her typical over the top statements. Or once, when she showed an owner how much her dog disliked being brushed by making the owner get on all fours and pretending to use a street sweeper on her. I just think it's funny. She reminds me of Mary Poppins (the proper, literary one, who was constantly yelling at her charges). And then she gets all lovey dovey with the dogs. |

Other owners gave hot chocolate each night to their dogs before bed. |
Ha, yeah, I remember those! Or that woman who had five hyperactive, disobedient dogs. It turned out they got ice cream every day! They would go nuts when they heard the ice cream truck because they knew they were each getting their own cone. |

I am addicted to "It's me or the Dog" too! I've never seen "The Dog Whisperer" show but I really don't like that he would use one of those static mats. |
