Where should my dog go potty at 3am? Hi everyone, I have a question about middle of the night pottying. I am crate training my yorkie stella and she is doing great. I keep an eye on her when she is not in her crate and take her out if I think she is going to go. When I am at work I keep her in a section of my kitchen where she will go potty on pee pads (she poos where-ever tho). Stella is still very young at 11 weeks and even tho I know she can hold it through the night I feel bad making her do that. So i have been getting up when she starts whining and taking her to the pee pads to go (at that time of the night she doesnt always go on the pad so I end up having to clean it up. ugh.). I want to know if I am confusing her and if I should be taking her outside at 3am OR if I should just have her hold it until morning? I hesitate to take her outside that late as I live in the Philly area and do not feel comfortable going outside every night that late. If I make her hold it I feel bad. Any thoughts or advice on this is appreciated!

My Maddie is the same age as your baby, so I know exactly how you feel! I take her outside at 3am, and I'm with you, I don't feel that safe, but I think it will help her learn better. I also don't think that your 11 week old CAN hold it all night...it's a pain, but personally, I think it will be easier in the long run if you take her outside, unless you always want to use pee pads.

~My grown dogs will go outside at 3 am, but I never take the babies outside at that time. I only would if I had a fence around a small yard, but we live in the country and don't have a fence. But will take them outside during the day. At night I use potty pads or newspaper. Good Luck!!

| I personally have always tried to stick with outside, but if you don't feel safe in the middle of the night, maybe the pee pads aren't so bad.

I have my 2 1/2 yr old yorkie trained to a litter box. They carry the box and litter at Pets Mart. She has also started to go outside when my lab does and she will also take care of business outside on the lawn. But if she has to go and my lab isn't going out, then she just goes over to her box.

Potty Training My Yorkie is both inside paper trained and outside trained. There are times when it is not convenient to take him out, such as when it is raining cats and dogs, or after dark. We have bears in our area, so I don't feel safe going out after dark. I don't think it has confused him at all. We have a house, but also a motor home we travel in and when ever we are at someone elses house, I just lay down newspapers and he knows to use them if he has to.

At night we keep Brody in an Xpen with his Rascal (grass litter box) and his crate with the door open. So he can potty as he needs. I don't think an 11 week old puppy can reasonably hold it all night. The trick is to make sure the pen is only big enough for them to be in their crate or their potty area, and nothing more. That way they are set up for success and can't have an 'accident' anywhere they shouldn't.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been getting out of bed and taking Stella outside at night. I do want her to go outside; however, I also want her to go on pee pads when I am not home. When I am at work I leave her in a gated area with pee pads. The first week she was great...she peed on the pads and everything was cool. Today I came and my bathroom was a MESS. It had poop and pee everywhere and shredded pee pads and newspaper. It was like a poop explosion! It took forever to clean her and my bathroom. I know she is too young to hold it for more than a few hours but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her not to shred the pee pads and actually go on them? I thought about getting a frame but I need to have a larger area covered. Any suggestion much appreciated!

Thanks, I will try the Hartz. Today I am going to spray the pee pads with bitter apple and hope that works. FINGERS CROSSED. When she gets in one of her puppy frenzies I do not think bitter apple will stop her! On a positive note, she did sleep through the night! Well, I tok her out at 5am which is really good!
