| Suddenly marking everything in the house! Oh boy, I'm so frustrated. JoJo stayed at my parents for a few days while I was away on a trip (he didn't pee in their house once), and since coming back home he's started marking nearly everything in the house! My couch, desk, doors, walls...just about everywhere. I'll take him out and he'll go, but I swear he holds some back just to mark inside the house when we come back in! Crate training isn't working, taking him out frequently isn't working either. I'm completely at a loss here. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, he's 10 months old and is getting neutered in 3 weeks. Will neutering help stop this behavior, or is it too late at his age?

| If he's already started heavily marking... neutering would be hard to stop it, but it should help. 10 months is a little too old, but still young enough I think. Just make sure you clean up all pee with an enzyme cleaner to get all the urine smells out.

| Visiting new territory or having a strange dog visit can sometimes trigger marking. Once the behavior has started, it can be very hard to stop. Ideally, we have them neutered right at six months before they ever start marking. If he were mine, I would not wait another three weeks to let the habit become even more established. I would get him neutered asap, then work very hard retraining him. |

| I do use belly bands but I normally only use them when I take him somewhere. I guess I'm going to have to start using them at home now. I'm kicking myself now because I really wanted to get him neutered sooner, but my finances didn't allow it. I would love to get him neutered ASAP, but the appointment I have in 3 weeks was the first available opening at my vet. I'll call them and see if they can possibly let me know if they have a cancellation prior to my appointment to try to get in sooner.

| aww I dont have a boy but was told that once they start it is hard to stop them... heres what I found about it.. hope it helps He's not going to just stop on his own. We're no longer talking about a hormonal issue but a behavioral one. A belly band will work to an extent, but will not be a complete solution because they are so darned easy for the dog to take off. They also do nothing to prevent him marking, they just catch the urine so it doesn't spray everywhere. You'll have to go back to square one with toilet training. Sorry, but that is the only way to fix this. Honestly. First, clean everywhere he has ever marked and treat those locations with an enzyme product designed to dissolve pet waste stains on a microscopic level. I like "Nature's Miracle" which is available at most pet stores. Use a black light to inspect your home and find urine spots previously undetected, or insufficiently cleaned up. You don't really need a schedule, but you do still need to keep both eyes on him when he is loose in the house. You being in the next room is not sufficient. Being in the same room is not sufficient unless you are actually watching him. When you cannot watch him, confine him someplace, in a crate or laundry room. Bear in mind it is not fair to just keep him locked up all the time when you get busy. You'll have to make time for him to be out in the house practicing several hours every single day. He will also need lots of vigorous exercise to make up for any confinement. Walking around the neighborhood may satisfy some of his urge to mark. He can "read" all the pee-mail left by other dogs and post his own replies on hydrants, trees, utility poles, etc. (but please not on peoples decorative flowers and shrubs). When you see him start to lift a leg indoors, interrupt him with a sharp, "No!" then rush him outside. Praise if he pees outside, even if it is a marking pee instead of a gotta go pee. One trick you might try to keep him with you so you really can keep an eye on him is an umbilicle. Tie his collar to your belt via a leash about four feet long. Where you go, he goes, and vice versa. It will keep you two from wandering into separate rooms and will keep him close enough to hustle him quickly outside if he tries to mark. Good luck. It's going to take a lot of work, but yes, it really can be fixed. You just plain have to be persistent and consistent. Each time he succeeds in marking sets your training back a month. So avoid even one slip up. 1 year ago

Belly bands aren't a solution to the problem, training is. Belly bands should only be used as a last resort, perhaps when visiting someone's home. I hope you can get him in to be neutered sooner. | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | It varies, but I've had much older dogs neutered, and this greatly cuts down on marking insided. I think you have a good chance, if you neuter as soon as possible. Another thing that helps is taking the dog for walks and allow him to mark the territory outside, and praise him for it, they can learn that this is acceptable outside behavior.
