After reading these stories I'm really nervous about adopting a Yorkie. On my street, if my dog got out once he would be hit by a car and that would be it. I just don't know what to do. We want a little yorkie so bad but we can't do anything about our location. Our house is also near the extremley busy street. Any Advice?

I am sure that a busy street is not a great place for any type of dog. You will just need to be extra careful. I am far from the yorkie expert that a lot of the great people on YT are, but just from my very limited experience with my puppy, she does not run after cars or take off from me. Any time a car drives by she stops and sits still. She is always on a leash, but she does not take off after cars. i just thought I would add that before you wrote off the possibility of getting a yorkie! They are such wonderful babies!!!

Just make sure she is always on a leash and nobody lets her out accidentally. She'll be ok if you are careful!

I had to read this one to my husband. he doesn't pay much attention to me when he is playing poker but this one got his attention. Ahia is the one here that will dash out the door if it is even sligltly open. we have chased her several times. I never knew yorkies could run so fast. like a grayhound it was! truely.
one good thing is that she will go directly to one particular neighbor's house. and wait there. they have a 3 yr old daughter (for some reason attracts animals, i tell her some day she will be a vet.)
ever notice all the bad things start with 'men'.... menopause, etc. LOL

The key is training and the come command is the most impotant behavior to tach a dog and it is absolutely necessary for their safety that they have that command down solid and come everytime they are called without hesitation. It is not hard to teach and should be reinforced daily.

Yorkies love to learn and to please and training is a good thing for them. it makes them feel like they have a purpose and it teaches boundaries and limitations. Dogs are similar to children in the fact that they thrive when they have boundaries and limitations that they are aware of.

Try putting a child safety gate in front of your door. They are easy to step over and will keep animals from being able to run out.

My two are way to fast for me too. We keep a gate right on the inside of the door. That way when someone opens it they dont have a chance to run. It works great.

Everyday when I comb her, I have to fight with her to get it done and a 5 minute procedure ends up a 20 minute one each day. She took off across the street like a tiny. superfast, black and gold heat seeking missile, looking for her friend Lady. After making a spectacle of my fat self running through the neighbors yard with a fly swatter, she ran back across the street and my hsuband had to catch her. Yes, friends, I did it. I spanked her with the fly swatter and now she is in time out!

Before any of you call the ASPCA, I didn't hit her very hard at all, just enough to let her know I'VE HAD IT!!!!!

I will pay large bills to anyone who can train this little s**t! Its a good thing she is so cute!

Did I mention I'm in menopause????????

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!! You are something else. This post made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes!!!!!

I know you aren't suppose to spank and your told bla bla bla, but i had the same problem with sugar when she was little. I spanked her for running off too. Better than getting killed by some large dog or hit by a car. She hasn't done it since. She is three yrs old now and i haven't had to spank her since. I swear she knows half my vocabulary. she is so smart. she never runs out the door and when i pick up her leash she will walk under it for me to hook her. smartest doggie i have.No i don't make it a habit of spanking dogs. I just have to scold them and they mind. She was just a little extra spoilled and trying to run the house hold. She also left her little teeth prints on our furniture.

Spanking my Yorkie

One evening, I sat our little Buddy on my bed while I went to brush my teeth. He had been sleeping with me at night and we both enjoyed it alot. Anyway - I evidently took to long, he peed on my bed. When I came out of the bathroom and seen what he had done, I picked him up and gave me a lite spanking on his butt ( the 1st time ever). I looked at his face and I swear he had tears in his eyes and was crying. It broke my heart to say the least. I don't really know if Yorkies cry real tears, but it sure looked like it to me. Anyway, our Buddy is not here now, but we are getting a new little girl next week to try to replace him.

Oh Cake, i'm so sorry about your little one. I didn't hardly spank sugar just patted her fat rump and scolded her really bad. She was the type when she got away she would make a game out of it. Got out of my sis-in-laws back yard and into both of the neighbors back yards. one of them had chows and the other had a rotty. about the time i would get close to her she would make a dive away from me. Me screaming her name like a maniac. lol I'm so glad those days are over. I always put a leash on her cause if she sees a squirrel or cat or anything strange in the yard she takes off after it, other than that she comes to me now. These little yorkies are exactly like little people to me. I love every single one of mine and they all have their own uneek personalities. I believe they cry , i know they pout. When my first yorkie died from kidney failure. I immediately bought sugar and they don't replace the other one but they find their own place in your heart .They really do fill a space in our hearts.People wouldn't believe the love i have for sugar. It's like she is my child. I have this bondage with her almost like a doggie soulmate. Sounds crazy don't it?

Default Yorkie owners are the BEST!

I must say when I first began to read this post, I completely indentified with it, and then the thought came to me... "OMG, someone is going to BASH this poor lady for hitting her dog!", and I began to read the replies hoping I was wrong. I am new here, but have been on many boards in my e-life. I know there are ALWAYS strongly opinionated people who are not shy about their posts just waiting to pounce on poor unsuspecting honest folks. HAPPILY I see that Yorkie owners are polite, sympathetic, and humorous people who support each other in their quests for happy and obedient pooches.

Kudos, Yorkie owners, and double kudos to each and every one of you who replied on this thread!! I am so happy to be among you!

Thank you for the feed back. Last Sat., we got our new little girl. Maggie Jo. You are so right. She is her own little self, totally different then Buddy with her likes and dislikes. But is very loved and getting pretty darn spoiled. CAKE

Default Funny Post

Man That was the funniest post I have ever read. She reminds me of my little Nephew of Chucky. They are so bad with the cutest face.
