| Dog and inside birds obsession Penny is obsessed with getting to our birds. We have boxes piled all around the cages so that she doesn't jump on the cages. How do the parrot owners on this site deal with their jumping dog that wants to "play" with the birds? |

| Hey there, I have a Conure named Papi and he is 10 years old now. I got him after he hatched. All five of my dogs know they are to respect our bird. He flys to his perch and they dont bother him but the birds outside, well thats another story. I found 2 bird legs in my house the other day...HUH Dont really know what to tell you except be firm and say no when they bother the cages...G |

| Neat, what kind of Conure? How in the world did you teach the dog to leave the bird alone??? Penny goes crazy all day long. She whines and springs up and down to try to get over the boxes to the birds. We tell her "no" and put her in the crate every time she won't stop, but for 3 weeks now she will do it anyway. She is fine when the birds are quiet. Once they start making noise it is all over with. |

| Papi is a Cuban. He speaks about 10 words or maybe more. He barks like the dogs and when they bark he says BE QUITE. So Smart. When my dogs where pups I had Papi walk on the floor(his wings where clipped) in front of them and we held the pups and would say no. I would also put papi on there backs and tell them no. I had a good grip. The dogs consider him a part of the pac. Now I did have some problems with Manolo who one day I found him stuck in the pan part of the cage. Dont know how he got in there. I dont trust my Scottie who is a rescue but he ignores the bird. Papi is a part of our family. Good Luck to you. |

| This is going to be hard ... Because yorkies were born to be ratters so they look for quick rapid motion and small animals when they hunt so you're dealing with instinctual behavior here How you break this habit is bring your dog into a room with you and the bird If he's quiet and good treat him but if he barks or jumps .... out he goes once he calms down you can try again and this is repeated again and again until you see improvemnt

| Thanks everyone Thanks for the suggestions. We have been locking her up in her crate when she goes nuts trying to jump the boxes. We have not tried holding her and letting the bird out yet. We want to get victory over the jumping boxes first. She is very intent to get them. My desk faces the cages, so she comes and sits in my lap and looks at them. LOL |

| We have an African Grey Parrot. The parrot has free run of the house. She mostly stays in her cage but she'll climb out and go on top of the cage or she"ll go down to the floor and walk to where ever she decides to go. Piper is so use to the parrot that she must think it's just a funny looking Yorkie after all the parrot barks just like Piper. They go nose to nose, and Piper tries to play but the parrot snubs her and then they go on their own way.

| I think you hit the nail on the head. Introduce them slowly with a good grip. Papi would ride their backs with us next to him of course |
