you guys... im gonna snap. I have done everything and i have been consistent. I had to put Leelu in her crate because i lost my temper and i scared myself. she has been in there ever since.(bout an hour) She is young (4ish months) and i am doing my best to be patient. but she doesnt get it at all. we went for a walk and not 10 minutes later she did BOTH on the floor. SHE JUST PEED OUTSIDE. I even control her water intake. I dont think she can be potty trained. I feel i am going to have to find another home for her. and its breaking my heart. i have listened to everything you all have said and i have spoken to two dog trainers. i dont know what to do. i havent lost my temper since i was a kid. i feel like i want to cry. If she cant be potty trained i have to get rid of her! i have NEVER done anything like that before. Any words? because ALL I SMELL IS PEE!!!! :fallen: |
She is still a baby. Sometimes it takes awhile but she will get it! |
Ill take her!! I cant belive you lost you temper over a 4 month old peeing on the floor. PLEASE whatever you do dont have kids. If you have read everything and talked to a so called dog trainer then you would understand it could take up to a year for a dog to be trained. You should never put a puppy in its crate for punishment and you should never control its water!!! Your puppy should have clean water all day. If you feel you cant wait for a year for your puppy to be potty trained then PLEASE find him a new home. Sorry for being so blunt but its how I feel. |
I'm sorry your having problems , but she is only 4 months old. Some dogs learn quicker than others , but most every dog will take at least eight months to a year to be trained , and even then accidents can happen. At four months old she needs free access to fresh clean water. Do you have a big play yard ? If not I would invest in one and let her play in there with a pee pad and only in there when she is not out with you.. Also alot of times when puppies play they have to go again soon after. So even if she pees outside, if plays some more she will most likely pee and maybe poo again. If you want her trained at four months with no accidents ,I think that is being unrealistic. We can all lose our tempers but you have to remember it is like yelling at a four month old baby because she doesn't know not to pee in her diaper. Just take her out and try again , she will get it if your being consistant. |
ok... Just so we are clear. I give her water all the time but i do it rationally so i know her schedule. I do not deprive my baby of necessities. She asks for water and i give her water. That way i have a better idea of when she needs to go out and she learns to ask for things. |
I can understand wanting her to learn a schedule , but at four months I think it would be better to just let her have free access to food and water , jmo. Are you using pee pads or training to outside only ? Are you home with her during the day or is she crated ? |
My Baron is 1 year old. I've had him for 6 months now. He is still not housebroken and he wears a belly band for marking too!! I used to yell and get upset!! It was not good for me or him and accomplished nothing!! Now, I just clean up the mess, Take a deep breath and try again... Someone on here told me it takes longer sometimes with smaller breeds. When he goes on the pee pads he gets a treat and when he doesn't he gets nothing as a treat!! I have 2 kids and still am not the most patient person in the world. It doesn't make you a bad person, just human... I Love my kids and my furbutts to death. Just keep trying, your little girl will get it eventually, and so will my Baron. Blessings to you, Baron's Mom |
sigh.. shew. i am feeling a little better now. and thanks for sharing with me. i will try some new techniques and take more deep breathes. any positive info will gladly be received. i know im a good mom. i just loose faith sometimes. |
If you can tell us what you are doing now, we can tell you how to improve your training techniques. All dogs can be potty trained, it's just a matter of how dedicated the owner is and how long it takes for the dog to "get it". Don't lose your temper. :) You've come to the right place. |
Don't get too frustrated..... it won't help you or Leelu. It took a LONG time to get Shelby & Seymour trained...... they do use a peepad when we are gone for a long time, or when we are traveling. Have you thought of trying them?... |
Yorkies are notorious for being hard to potty train. If you are going to get upset everytime she has an accident, be prepared to be upset a lot. My Daisy is 2.5 yrs old and will still have accidents. 4 months is awfully young to have such high expectations. You have got to keep your cool. Please don't punish her by putting her in her crate. Her crate should be a safe haven for her, not her time out area. Get her a large xpen for the kitchen or a tiled area and put her food, water, toys and pee pads in there if you're afraid she'll pee on carpet. I feel bad for your puppy :( |
BTW, any expert, including a vet will tell you that your baby should have access to fresh clean water at all times. |
If you haven't already, I'd suggest getting Nature's Miracle or something similar -- that will clear up the pee smell, and remove any trace scent that might tempt your darling to mark that spot again. If it makes you feel any better, here is my story: Thor is 2 1/2 years old. When I first started taking care of him, he was not fully housebroken, and I took him out eight times a day or more. I started gradually cutting back, and now I can take him out as little as three times per day. However, if I play fetch with him indoors, he will pee, even if he has JUST been outside. He doesn't seem to think anything of it. He will lift his leg and go right in front of me. At the moment, I will only toss his sock one or two times so he doesn't get too worked up. Also, this morning, I was feeling sluggish. I got up late, and decided to feed the dogs before I took them out for their morning walk. I started slowly getting ready to get outside, and... you know where this story is going, right? I found a puddle of pee in the kitchen and a pile of poop next to my door. The way I see it, Thor keeps me honest. We get out of bed together, I go to the bathroom, and then I take him to his bathroom. That's the schedule. Also, this may be a little new-agey for you, but have you examined why you got so angry? Is it because you feel like your dog is peeing to spite you or something? I think if you can figure out what upset you so much, you'll be more likely to be able to control your anger, because it would be very sad if you lost your temper with your puppy. As others have said, she is still very young and will need time to grasp the whole pottying concept. I bet it took you a lot longer than four months! ;) This isn't meant to be judgmental, so I apologize if it sounds that way. |

:thumbup: Everything she just said is right - I have 2 girls 2 years apart - my 1st (Chanel) trained in less than 2 weeks - my 2nd (Cheri) took 11 MONTHS .....and that was with a yard - an older sister and wee pads - she needs water at all times - small breed puppies have tiny bladders so they need to go much more often than bigger breeds - every dog is different but please don't take your frustrations out on your puppy - you'll only stress her out and make it worse ....and please - never hit a dog - that only makes them more fearful and will make training even harder...not to mention - you could really hurt her - Good luck |
totally understand how frustrating potty training can be. Being consistant is the most important concept. At pet smart they suggest putting your pup on a leash (use of a harness style for Yorkies) and this way you know where your pup is at all times...so you can watch her and when you feel that she is about to do her business...take her out side or if you want to pad train her..you can take her to her pee pad and tell her "go potty"...then if she pees..be sure to praise her and give her a treat immediately each and every time. Crating her for mistakes will not train her...she will not know what she is being put in the crate for. The crate should be a "good place" and a safe and happy place that your pup will like to go to. It takes time and patience....x-pens work great for when you can't watch her all the time..put her food, water and pee pads and her crate with her bed in it...it's a safe place for her and gives you some peace of mind. Good Luck :-) |
The synonym for Puppy in the thesaurus is Frustration ... They are a lot to handle They need to be watched, fed right given water when they need, brought to the Vet for vaccines and for any emergencies that come up and they keep you up at night But .... just one minute with them :p and it's all worth it All dogs can be house trained and it takes 3 things 1. A Dog 2. An owner to train 3. A House And that's it |
Aw, I feel your frustration but please be patient with her, she's just a baby, she's still learning. Get a good cleaner for your carpet - something that removes all of the pee stuff. Remember to praise TONS and give treats when she does what she's supposed to. Make sure you take her out constantly and you really do need to keep fresh water down for her at all times - I fix Lilly fresh in the morning and sometimes I'll have to fill it up again during the day if she plays extra hard. If you keep steady with her it will all def. pay off. Just make sure you keep those pee spots cleaned up. |
it takes time i know how u feel...very frustrated, and mad... it takes alot of time...my puppy is 9mos now... we don't have too many accidents anymore...usually when visiting, :rolleyes:lol when i tell someone, how long it has been without an accident...she does it...i thnk as they mature, they start feeling bad for what they have done, and think about it twice before going in the house the next time... sometimes it seems like they couldn't care less. i think they r testing us???lol buggers riley dances in front of the door and wimpers now... cross my fingers, lol:animal-pa good luck, just be patient. ur little one will make your very proud of her in her own time... oh yeah, we make a big deal out of her going outside!!! her grampy gives her treats sometimes when she goes out at grampies house:aimeeyork |
Awww... If it makes you feel any better, my Maximus will be 17 weeks this Thursday and he still pees in the floor at times. Sometimes, he will be standing right next to his pee pad and pee on the floor. We are also crate training, but as much as I can, we let him run around our bathroom (our master bath is large) with his pee pads. The other problem I am having his him playing with his pee pad. I am thinking about buying one of those pee pad holders. I do get jealous of others that already have house broken pets. My aunt has a dachshund that is a little over a year, and she is house broken. I want to let him roam around the house but I just don't feel comfortable letting him do that yet. As much as I can I will sit and hold him in the living room while we are all in there, or let him sit on my bed with us (although, I really have to watch him there because he has peed on my comforter a time or two, no signs whatsoever, just standing there like he isn't doing anything, little rascal). I try to be really, really clean with him because I'm so scared my dh will get upset if the house starts smelling (he is not an indoor dog person). I bought some Petzyme from PetSmart that I use whenever he pees on the floor, bed, carpet, etc. I'm sure there are other products just as good too. I also clean his crate with it when he has accidents. It is very frustrating, I understand. It will take some time. Just remember he is a baby and he is still learning. I have started praising him and rewarding him when I see him potty on his pad, or poo on his pad, as mentioned above. It seems to frustrate me more when he doesn't pee on the pad when I'm in a hurry and don't have time to clean it up (or after I step in it, lol). He has taught me lots of patience since his arrival on November 1. ((((HUGS)))) |
OK I'm going to put myself out there...Keegan took 4 YEARS to completely potty train! I believe it was from him being taken away from his mother when he was too young. I got him when he was (supposedly) 12 weeks old but the crazy lady I got him from said the pup were too big & mama was so small that she took them away from her at 4 weeks!!! Yeah nuts,eh? We had to work with him a LOT to boost his confidence. Anyway he is a wonder dog & a great companion. |
Puppy pamper I use it so that there is no pee on my carpet and no stress with mistakes house training is a lot less stressful trust me girl |
I'd suggest getting Nature's Miracle or something similar -- that will clear up the pee smell, and remove any trace scent that might tempt your darling to mark that spot again. This is excellent advice! This stuff really works wonders. |

And if I may share my tale of woe: this evening, I was leashing the dogs up for a walk, when I found a wet spot on my carpet. Yep folks, that would be twice in one day. That hasn't happened in months. I guess Thor agreed with me that it was time for a potty break. We just didn't agree on where. |
You should have got an adult already trained. I feel bad for the poor thing if she never get's trained. There are alot of Yorkies on here who are not potty trained at all. |
my Gizmo was 7 months Gizmo was 7 months old before he finally stopped having accidentsand even then he could only go about 4 hours. He finally stopped having any accidents at all about a year old. Have patience it will happen. Basalt:) |
Wizzy is now 8 months old and just NOW understanding the concept of housetraining . Be patient , be consistent , and above all ..be kind . Your dog wants nothing more than to love and be loved . It will all get better . Believe in that and it will transcend into a better situation . |

if it makes you feel any better, bentley is 14mos and miss buffey is 15mos ... miss b is about 90% wee wee pad trained (if you count going right next to the wee wee pad as a "success" ;) ) and bentley is about 40% pad trained...he just does not get it unfortunately...so we have reverted to giving treats EVERY time he goes on the pad ... and he still peed and poohed (two separate occasions lol) on the floor today right in front of me ... i thought he was old enough to only treat them every so often but guess not :D hang in there...it will be worth it  |
I certainly understand the OP's frustration. I have zero tolerance for peeing in the house. Bailey was potty trained at 4 mos. and reliable at 6 mos. Puppyhood was very trying for me - and I'm sure it can be for others. Potty training wasn't easy. It took the dedication of both me and my husband. The process is simple - the work was hard. 1. Block off the family room - leave no hiding places for the pup. 2. Lay down some blankets to save the carpet and wash after accident to remove the smell. 3. Watch, watch, watch the puppy. All eyes on the dog 4. If you cant look at the dog, put her in a kennel. 5. Catch her in the act, say "outside!", scoop her up and go outside. 6. Once outside - say "go potty". 7. Praise and treat when she successfully goes outside 8. Repeat as necessary. Optional: Get a service bell, place on the floor. Then as you scoop up the pup, take her paw and tap the bell and say "outside" . We did this with Bailey - and now she rings the bell to go potty. Its hilarious!!!! While at work - she's in a xpen all day - with water and pee pad. Of course, when she was young - she peed all over and chewed her pee pad - but I didn't care - I just accepted the fact that I would have to clean her pen everyday (no big deal - she was worth it). And of course, as she got older, she quit chewing the pads and began to hold it all day around 8 mos. I bought a piece of vinyl from Home depot and put that under the xpen - again to save the floors. ($10) Again, I have no tolerance for peeing in the house - so potty training was very important to me - and we dedicated all our free time to her training until she was successful. A few months of dedication have resulted in a lifetime of trust. Other than an occasional accident (which are less than 8) Bailey has been 100% potty trained since 6 mos of age. Good luck - and feel free to pm me - I will be glad to help anyway I can!!! |
I know how frustrating potty training can be, but there is hope! It was like a lightbulb went off for my puppy when he turned 5 1/2 months old. We can even have rugs and blankets on the floor now. He only goes on the one pee pad by our bathroom and/or outside. He's 7 months old now and is 99.99% potty-trained. If I can do it, then so can you! Just be very consistent and optimistic. Keep placing him on the peed pad/take him outside every couple of hours and give him the pee command. Good luck! Hope everyone's encouragement helps you cope. |
