| ..just a gripe! Today is like day 1.5 of crate training Trixie to potty outside and all, and during her 10 mins of roam free time after peeing outside.. what does she do? She POOPS! I didn't knwo what to do about htis, so I immediately put her back in the crate/box and cleaned it up and put it back outside where it goes (and where we want her to potty).

| I think that pretty much tells you she was not outside long enough. When she pees or poops give her a little treat ( very little, you don't want to upset their little tummy) you have to give the treat the minute they do it and say "good girl". Some think they can give the treat when they come in and the dog doesn't know what the blazes it's for - you'll do fine remember Rome wasn't built in a day.

| Hmmm... thats a good idea and that's exactly what we do as well. We always give her the treat when she comes in afterwards... So should I give it to her right after she does it outside? and then come back inside when shes done, but if its due for her to do more, I wait a while and then she gets 2 treats right?

for them they sometimes get the scent of where they did their business inside and are not sure what there owners want. Try to get something from the pet store that REALLY cleans up odor where she went in the house and that will help alot too. Good Luck

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Crystalsmom is correct...that is exactly what we do with our girls...and it has worked!! We are about 90% there on the going outside and the rest is on pee pads...but give it some time and she will figure out what is going on!!!

| Thanks everyone I am gonna start doing the treats this way ASAP. Im about ready to take her out in about 15 mins. I've also been told that I am to stay outside with her until she potties .. is this true? I've been staying out about 15-30 mins and if she does nothing, I put her back in the crate and then repeat about 30-45 mins. later.. is this correct as well? And its funny... We trained Daphne pretty easily and so forth and of course gave her treats when she did her business outside... but still after 3 years she still expects a treat and we give it to her! (we've got it down to fruit loops or peanut butter balls cereal now though lol)

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I have heard that you are suppose to stay out until they potty but we give our girls about 20 mins to do their business and they either do it or they don't...if they don't then we will watch for any signs of needing to potty!!! But I think that is up to you.... Magic is almost one now and she still thinks she needs treats and one time when we tried to stop, she stopped pottying outside...so now we just stick to the treats....just smaller pieces!!

| P. S. I agree you can't stay out there forever but if she doesn't go then back in the crate but I would limit it to 20 minutes since you don't want her to make a mistake. Once you get the idea of how long she is between pees, you can judge better. Of course the older she gets the longer she will be able to hold it and then there is mine 11 yrs old and back to the puppy stage. #2 is usually after ea. meal. Thats so cute that two of your Yorkies are still getting treats and certainly the treats you are giving are fine. I use pee pee pads alot too and it is so wonderful on cold mornings. When you see her pee some day you could take a pad and rub it in her urine and put it down somewhere where you will want the pad FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE- they are so funny about having that pad changed. If you've got her going outside and some and on the pad too, you've got it home free. Oh, my gosh forget what I said about pads, it will just mix your older one up and you'll have more trouble than you started with. I'll leave this here though for someone just starting out with one pup.
