| Crying like Crazy Today was the first day I left my baby at home alone. He cried and cried and would not stop. I felt about the size of a penny and was distraught for the rest of the day (4 hrs) that I was gone. I sat outside the door and listened to him cry for 15 minutes before I finally left. When I came home he was asleep in his crate (i put a blanket, a tshirt that I had worn the day before and his kong in the crate) and I left classical music playing. He is 5 months old and will start crying if I even leave the room that he is in. I always come back in and give him a piece of cheese once he's quiet but is there anything else that I can do to make him feel better? Not sure if I can take this.....and its only been a day. How much longer will this last? I will not take him out of the crate if he is barking or crying but I feel like my heart is breaking. Please help me if you can. |

| aww its tough. We've all been there. I read that dogs, like children, go through separation issues around this age. Does he have the run of the house? Maybe this is too overwhelming for him... Make sure you have a ritual when you leave the house. Layla hangs out on the stairs when i leave. So i put down a blanket on the stairs for her to sit on. I tell her to come give mommy a kiss.. which puts her on the stairs and then i say.. mommy will be RIGHT back. But you could maybe give him a special toy or his Kong... I also leave the TV on.. just so she can hear voices- the cooking channel is our fav Also make sure when you come in you are very low key.. give him a good boy.. if he wants to be picked up - ignore him for a while... and when he has settled give him a special treat and a lot of loving. RIght now he doens't understand that when you leave you ARE coming back.. so if you start the ritual he will undrestand that when A B and C happen that means you will go away and then come back... he'll start to make the connection. and 4 hours is not bad.. a lot of little ones get left for the whole day.. their moms must be very heartbroken!!! Keep it up.. it's like crate training.. they cry and CRY for a few nights until they get it |

| I'm trying to crate train him now. I don't think he has ever spent any time in his crate before (this is the first week that I had him). He just seems so stressed. Even if I put him in his playpen he just cries and cries....If I don't see some improvement over the next two weeks i'm going to have to find a babysitter for him. I'm only gone 4hrs a day since I can work from home 1/2day during the week. He has the entire run of the house when i'm home but at 5 months i'm afraid that if I give him the run of the house he'll find a way to get into trouble. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going to try to stick to my guns but man....this is way harder than I ever thought it would be. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Like Marcella said just keep working with him and try leaving for short periods of time and get him use to you coming and going. I live in Gurnee if you need a hand!

| He is a mamma's boy... if nothing else works then A petsitter is a very good idea. He does need to get use to being left alone. Separation anxiety is rough.

Oh wow...your right around the corner....you wouldn't be interested in housebreaking my baby for me would you or doing daycare for him??? I feel so bad for leaving him on his own that you could virtually name your price Incidentally the crying happens whenever i am out of his sight...even if i'm in the same room but he is in his playpen he screams like i'm killing him.....he's such a brat. Luv him though....kinda hard not to with a face a cute as his! | |

| I'm going to try the short intervals to see how that goes....i'd prefer to leave him in his playpen rather than his crate when i'm gone so he'd have more room to move around but at present his crying is more hysterical when he can see me leave. How long should the intervals start out with? He cries for a good 10 to 20 minutes when i leave him and i don't want to take him out when he is still crying. Or do you start counting the time confined when the crying starts? |

| We are starting to do this as well, Bowies daddy works from home so he is used to always having someone there, which i dont like, we cant go anywhere . I am trying to get him to leave bowie everyday for at least a half hour. I know he will be fine after he is used to it, ava was left at home about 2 weeks after i got her she was also around 3 months.

| Mocha had the same seperation issues when he was younger. He would whine and cry like no tomorrow whenever he was left alone. You just have to learn to let go and realize that they eventually get over it. I too, suggest leaving him for increased intervals of time. I know it's hard, but you can't give into his whining/crying. If I had always given into Mocha's crying, we would be nowhere by now. But now, I can leave him home all day if I need to. I bought a Pet Cam so I could see what he does when I'm gone...and lo and behold he just sleeps during the whole time

| I never thought of a pet cam. I think I will get one this weekend and see if that works. |
