I introduced Tessa to the bell when I first got her at 10wks old. I made her hit it with her paw everytime I put her outside and after about a month, she started doing it on her own. Tessa has since "taught" Harley to use it, and now my cat will also use it. FYI my cat is 6yrs old and saw that the dogs got to go out when they ran it so she started to use it too!

Unfortunately, we work too - so Bailey is in an ex-pen 8 hrs a day - 4 days a week. I never tried to train her in it. I just laid down pee pads in a litter box and cleaned it up every day.

Sometimes she went on the pee pad, sometimes she'd go outside the box and often she chewed up the pee pad. At about 8 months she outgrew all those bad habits. Now, she either holds it - or goes on the pee pad - and she doesn't chew it up at all. I was always told that dogs will not mess where they live - and it was true - they just have to grow into it.

Ok - so I bought a service bell from office depot, and I've been scooping up Darwin and making him hit the bell and then saying "outside" each time we go out to potty, but he's super scared of the bell!!! As soon as I pick him up and get his paw out he struggles in my arms to get free and does anything he can to move away from the bell...did this happen to anyone else's yorkie?? Should I keep it up in hopes that he will overcome this fear of the bell and eventually learn to ding it by himself?

Yes, Bailey did the same thing when potty training. It took a few weeks for her to understand it. Today, she'll just lightly paw at it - if she's just bored and wants to go out and play. But when she's serious about pottying - she will hit it dead on several times and then come stare until we get up to let her out.

We use a bell too. I have one hanging next to my door, so that it doesn't ring everytime we go out. I would just ring the bell and say "outside" After a few weeks, she started ringing it herself...and I made a big deal out of it. She does ring it whenever she wants to go out...

Go to the bird section in a pet store I got a nice brass bell on a chain. My baby rings it whenever he wants to go out. As it is summertime he rings it alot. It is funny that the bell was supposed to be for bathroom breaks only but it works for that too.

Darwin rang the service bell for the first time today all by himself! I was sitting on the couch reading a book, and I hear "ding, ding" and I'm thinking to myself, why the heck are people riding their bikes out in the woods? Then I realized, omg, it's the pup!! He rang it twice pretty dead on, and then waited patiently by the door while I fretted about putting his harness on and taking him out. He smelled left and right for about 10 mins though before going potty, but at least he went! But then when he wanted out a couple hrs later to poop, he didn't bother with the bell...he kinda just scratched at the door. I waited with him by the door to see if he'd ring the bell, but no such luck, so I rang it for him with his paw. Did this happen with your pups? Does it take a while for them to get consistent with the bell? I'm still really excited that he rang all by himself even if it was an accident!

I love the idea but I think Mufasa would just think it was a toy and want to play with the bells all the time. How do you discourage him from playing with the bells but then encourage him to ring the bell to go potty?

Well I usually remove the bell if my Diddy is in one of his moods to keep ringing especially if had been out already.

Yep, I continued to ring the bell with Bailey's paw too - just as you are. He's on the right track! Congratulations on your success!!!!

Bailey never played with the bell - but she did learn to ring it to go outside just to play - which was often. Of course, we had to honor the bell so we let her out everytime. She was praised/treated only if she pottied. We live in Missouri - so the bell abuse quickly stopped when the weather turned cold - but she continued to ring it to potty (yay!).
