Ugh, whining & barking like crazy!!!

So Bear loves to bark & whine Every day he wakes me up anywhere from 5:30am-7:30am with his barking & whining. I keep him in a play yard where he has food, water, a bed, a blanket, & a puppy pad. I only put him there when I can't watch him, when my daughter is crawling around, when I'm sleeping at night, or when I leave the house. He HATES being in there. He whines & barkes like CRAZY every time I put him in there, & it's seriously getting annoying! I need some sleep, lol. I have tried putting coins in a jar & rattling them, banging two pots together, & spraying him in the face with water, but none of these work! I can't just let him sit there & whine & bark, because I live in a duplex & the neighbors would hear him & complain. Do they outgrow this stage or is it forever? I know that he is still very young (he's only two months) & I'm sure that he gets quite lonely & scared, but I can't let him sleep in bed with me because I KNOW for sure that he would pee in my bed. I have also tried putting the play yard in my room at night, but this doesn't help either. I also take him out to potty outside when he starts whining & barking, but that doesn't help either! Does anyone have any advice as to curb this behavior? I definitely don't want him to grow up & think that it's ok to bark & whine whenever he wants something.

Amy ... maybe you can try some Treats ... they work Wonder ....

Put him in the Playpen (during the day and night) ..... and when he starts barking ... tell him with a firm voice ' NO BARKING '.... it will take a few times but Yorkies are pretty smart and if he does what you say ... reward him right away .... this I how I got Maya to 'sit' and 'lay down' and 'no barking' .... you HAVE to be patient it will take a while .... but he will get the hint ....

First of all praise when he is quiet. Say "good quiet". Second, I would put him in a covered crate inside his play yard, at least when you are home. The cover really helps to quiet them. My puppy school teacher suggested I do this with Holly to get her to be quiet. Now, Holly has her crate door open in the play yard, and only yells when she really wants something. You need to set the boundaries early or you will have problems later on.

You've gotten great advice so far. Go with that and one other suggestion: Talk to your neighbor, explain that you are training and that a little barking now, will me a much quieter dog in the future.

Anytime you get him out, while he's fussing/whining/barking you reinforce that behavior. You will only get more of it.

Wait until he's quieted (use suggestions above from previous posters to achieve that) before getting him out. He's already learned that whining works, so it'll take awhile to convince him otherwise.

Thanks for the GREAT advice everyone I will definitely be trying these out for sure! I never thought of putting him in a crate with a blanket over it in his play yard ... & I totally forgot that I should praise him when he is quiet, lol. Oops. I need to go to the pet store today & see if they have those yoghurt drops that someone on here was talking about. Do any of you know if regular, plain yoghurt is ok to give them as a treat instead of the yoghurt drops? What about peanut butter?

Plain yogurt and peanutbutter are safe to give them. in fact I got a recipe from a website called bullwrinkle.com I took them to a meetup yesterday and the Yorkies loved them.

They are safe, and Cheerios are great as a treat!
