Anyone have a quiet yorkie? I am supposed to be getting a yorkie this weekend and am very excited, but also nervous. I am hoping to bring my yorkie out with me as often as possible (work, errands, etc.), but he will need to be quiet in order for us to get away with this :) People say yorkies have a reputation for being "yappy" and this makes me a bit nervous. Does anyone have a yorkie that's quiet and that they're able to keep with them when out and about? |
Congrats on your new arrival! Yorkies are such a joy to own! My baby is pretty quiet. I took him everywhere with me for the first several weeks...work, wal mart, mall, etc. Only place he hasn't gone is a restaurant. I think that if they are around a lot of people they get used to that. Mine LOVES people. He thinks all people are there for is to love on him. He only barks when he's scared or wants to play. Have fun with your new baby!!!!:) |
Kaba has always been a very quiet pup. By six months, I had only heard her bark maybe twice. She is now 8 months and rarely barks and its a very quiet bark when she does. The best thing to do, is get whatever you are going to use to take her out (carrier, stroller) and start small. Walk around the house giving her treats when she's quiet. Work up to going outside. Small bursts 15 min at a time. Then work up to going to a place that allows dogs and keep giving her treats. Basically, they will learn whatever you teach them. Kaba was going in her carrier at 9 weeks and learned really quickly. Though its been a quite a few months since I've used it and so things might be different now. |
welcome to YT:) Max was a very quiet puppy and now at a little over a year he is still quiet for the most part. He only barks when someone rings the doorbell, which is good cuz I think I would miss all my packages if he didnt let me know the bell was ringing lol |
Congrats on getting a puppy. I think the more you socialize your puppy the better off you will be. Punkin is almost 3 now and only barks when the doorbell rings or if she hears a different car in the neighbour's driveway. Days and days go by and we don't hear her bark. She does make other noises to communicate with us. She makes a specific noise to go out, another when she needs help jumping up on the spare bed, she happy howls when she is excited about us coming home or playing with her. When we take her places (shopping, walks etc.) she never makes a noise. |
Welcome to YT!! my Cricket went everywhere with me for months,, she was always quiet in her bag,, we even went to restaurants and took her in,, no one ever had a problem,, but the next 2,,they are more vocal,, they are individuals,, best of luck with you new baby!! look forward to seeing pics!;) |
Welcome! Hot Rod is pretty quiet. I've had him everywhere except a restaurant. We had him for about 1 1/2 mos before we heard him bark and my husband said that he scared himself when he first did it! They were playing around on the floor. Now he only barks when he thinks he sees a "threat" in the sunroom (lots of reflections and birds). |
One quiet Yorkie We take Chibi out often, on the train(quiet Japanese train), in the restaurant, in the store...and he doesn't bark. In general we are very lucky. He barks maybe once or 2 times a day. When he is playing or daddy is going home. So not all Yorkies are yappy. Congrats on your new Yorkie! |
My Baby is also pretty quiet. He goes everywhere with me. He may bark when he is excited about going out for a walk but other than that he is very quiet. I do think all their personalities are different so you never know what your going to get but even if your baby barks a bit that's ok...you just can't stay mad at those little faces :) |
My Oliver is a very quiet one as well...we also took him everywhere when he was little....he got to meet all kinds of people and kids and be in a variety of situations. Socializing is very important. He is not yappy at all....except however if he sees a soccer ball!!!!! He has been to many a game and just wants to play so bad!!! lol! Hopefully little Brooklyn will be the same!! Good luck! |
Mine are both yappers at home but quiet when we are away from home. |
Hello and welcome :) Lucy can be yappy in her backyard chasing birds etc. but when we are out in public she is very well behaved - even on a plane. Enjoy your new baby! |
I have a choc lab that doesnt bark at all maybe twice a day when he wants to go out. Now my yorkiepoo is learning from the lab so she doesnt bark unless my kids get rowdy or the door bell rings. She only will bark a couple of times when these things happen. My dogs are pretty quiet. |
Anyone have a quiet yorkie? not in THIS lifetime :D We're working on it... but I swear what one does - the other has to imitate our worst time for 'barking' is getting dressed for walks - you'd think they were going to Disneyworld....they have to announce it to the WORLD  when getting their harnesses on - but once we get outside - they stop. |
Gazou and Zankou are quiet but the girls are on the wild side . I love it . There are never a dull moment with the little devils . |
Mine are all pretty quiet. Teddy and Sophie bark when the doorbell rings. Sophie also barks at Teddy when i am going to walk her as if to tell Teddy back off it's her turn:rolleyes: London doesn't bark, except when she wants me to put her on the bed and it's sorta like a whine, if i ignore her she gets louder and makes sure i hear her LOL But when im out with them, if they're in the carriers no they don't bark. They are used to it. |
Yes, Tatum is pretty quiet and actually a little shy around people. She's been socialized quite a bit since puppyhood and is so very well behaved in public. At home she barks when she sees one of us coming up the long driveway and barks at Stormie (our Aust. Shep.) when they are playing outside but is overall not a "yappy dog". She will make one "yip" to be let into the house but will only do a weird sound (not a yip but with her mouth closed) to go outside to potty. I also love her little "beep" that she does when her bully stick is left on our bed that's too high for her to jump up on. I too had heard that about Yorkies but I sincerely believe that their personality has a lot to do with the owner's personality. We are a very laid back family (my daughters are SO very different from my rambunctious nephews) so I think Tatum has picked up on that. My toy poodle (of 16 years) was also that way..... and poodles are supposed to be "yappy dogs" also. Good luck in training yours. I see you've gotten some good advice here. |
When my 2 are together...... there is always barking. Sometimes I will take Shelby with me shopping (Seymour stays home and does guy stuff with hubby ;) )....... and she is always very quiet and happy in her carrier. She just looks around and never barks. It is almost as if she knows that she is to be quiet and "unnoticed" so she can go shopping with me. Of course, last week we were in the Vera Bradley store and the clerk recognized the carrier and asked if she could meet Shelby........ which I happily obliged.... (Shelby LOVES to meet people). :D |

My Pixie is very vocal! |
quiet yorkie? What is that?? |
Mojo is very quiet....even at home....he can get loud when playing or if LilyGrace starts barking. He has always been such a good boy....when I first bought him, I worked and had my own office....he went w/ me that whole summer (I quit at the end of summer). LilyGrace, she is okay taking her places....but she is loud at home! She will park at a car horn or door bell on tv, or bark if someone comes down the drive way, etc. |
I think socializing plays a major roll in their behavior. Get him out and about as much as humanly possible. Let people hold him, even the little kids. Dogs who are afraid of people and animals are usually your barkers. Keep in mind that ALL dogs (except for the Basenji) will bark for one reason or another and it's usually when they think they have to defend their homes and masters or just excitiment at going somewhere. |

Lovetoypups, First, congrats on your soon-to-be furkid! I have two yorkies. Ginger is quite the yapper...there's no sneaking in ANYWHERE with that one! Bernie's the polar opposite. She'll be barking up a storm and if he even bothers to look her direction I swear he's thinking, oh geez, there she goes again. |
so far so good Ben has been doing great I try to take him everywhere possible to get used to things. he really is a great dog. |

V, this is SO MY HOUSE! When I get home and change, I CANNOT put on shoes unless we are going OUTSIDE! BUT, when we go out anywhere, they are quiet and never get crazy like at home... I think most are better behaved away from home.... d |

HHmmmm....Well my two are polar opposites of each other, Duncan has been out ever since he was a baby. Hes v social and thinks hes the supervisor anywhere he goes. Hes so nosey! I have taken him everywhere, including outdoor resturants and hes always been good. The only prob w/ taking Duncan out is, he gets car sick! Piper on the other hand, she is sooooooooo laid back. She barks when they play or when its time to eat, but Im not sure she really enjoys being out in the world. Duncan will smile and talk to get peoples attention as if to say HEY YOU LADY, wook at me!!! but Piper would rather be home. Maybe she will learn to enjoy being out as she gets older but so far she seems to be a homebody. Duncan thinks hes a german shepard at home, has to protect everything! Pipers just like who cares, LETS PLAY! Good luck with your new baby and the more social they are, the more they learn about stuffs. But like with mine, each one is different so see how it goes. Elizabeth Duncan and Piper :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
My dog Keoki is quiet and only barks if there is someone outside of my house I also take him everywhere with me and he is quiet. It is easy just start him or her off young ( I got Keoki at 6 months and he is great). When you put him in the bag give him a treat so he associates that and at first if he makes noise be stern and tell him NO and do not reward that behavior and he will get the hint- My dog loves going anywhere with me and is so easy. I think the quiet part may have to do with his personality? Anyway good luck and enjoy- I'm sure this baby will bring you more happiness than you ever thought possible.:) |
I have a yapper and a non-yapper. Sadie likes to let everyone know that she's around. Lillie on the other hand is the quietier of the two. Lillie only barks when Sadie barks...not that she can see what's going on...she just want's to be like her big sister. Especially in the car. |
