I told 'my husband that Yorkies don't bark much (don't know where I got that) when we went to look at our little baby the night we got her. When we pulled up to the house, there was barking going on everywhere. The couple had her parents and her brother, and they were all announcing our arrival. Ours barks at everything,:D , and she also tries to "talk" to us all the time. She makes the strangest little noises to tell us things. Quiet Yorkie? I don't have one.:)

LoveMyJake 03-30-2008 01:57 PM

Congratulations!

I have two males, Jake and Jackson. Jake is very quiet and laid back. He plays ALOT, but he doesn't bark much and is just really quiet. He has always been this way, very calm.

Jackson is the total opposite. He is very vocal and ornery! lol But, he is 7 mos. old and still a pup. Some yorkies are quiet and others aren't.

Odie in London 03-31-2008 07:23 AM

Odie is quiet for the mostpart. Once and a while he'll get vocal but that is only when he is really excited playing fetch or if a stranger comes around and he grrrss at them..lol
I have taken Odie EVERYWHERE... He is really good in his bag and doesn't make a fuss. He normally falls asleep in there because it is so cuddly and warm :p

My Bella's pretty quiet. The only time she barks is if she's outside and hears someone/something on the other side of the fence. We don't leave her outside so it's not an issue with the neighbors, she only goes out to "do her thing". We took her to the sportsman show this last fall and there were all sorts of people and dogs and she never made a peep. She seems to only bark if she's trying to be protective (door bell rings, etc) and then it's just a quick bark, she runs to see who it is and is quiet.

Frederick1030 04-02-2008 04:30 AM

Frederick is very quiet. He just cries when he wants me to play with him :p

yorkies2luv 04-02-2008 10:11 AM

Both Mozart and Emmy are quiet. Mozart is 10 years old. He has always been very quiet---rarely barks. Emmy only barks at the doorbell or if she hears a noise at night. She is a good guard dog at 4 lbs!!

lovetoypups 04-02-2008 03:52 PM

Well I have my furbaby now and he's relatively quiet. He whimpers now and then and I don't know why--it makes me so sad for him. He does bark sometimes when he wants me to play with him and always for about 15minutes when he goes into his crate. That breaks my heart and I hope soon he won't be so sad to go in there.

Potter 04-02-2008 06:07 PM

Pao is very quiet. Only whines when he wants something and have just learnt from another dog to bark at doorbells.

FL Tink 04-02-2008 06:30 PM

Bella only barks when I sign off Aol

Karrie 04-02-2008 06:31 PM

I assume you're talking about the non-stop barking? Bailey only barks when she plays - and even then, just once or twice when she's excited.

But boy, does she make lots of other noises to communicate - I just love it!!
She will wookie talk when we play, she will give little woofs when she's concerned about something - i.e. doorbell, see's a horse across he yard, etc. - and my favorite - she will silently wimper in the a.m. before the alarm goes off -she won't cry 'cause she'll get shush'd - but she will whine with nothing but air. Love it! :)

Molly is quiet as a mouse!

Molly very rarely barks, I put her in my purse walked in jewel the other day, and she was super. I think its is luck of thr draw because my old yorkie was a yapper. However, I got my girl at almost 3 years, so we knew her temperment.

Grayson's mom 04-07-2008 02:28 PM

Yup quiet when he sleeps lol :p

Grayson barks at the tv, barks to the doors, barks outside, barks if a kid comes around hall to quick never ends yap yap yap

Ash The Great 04-26-2008 01:11 AM

Mine is quiet. I don't know if it's because it's young but it was born on January 15th, 2008.

Is that still too young for it to start barking?

Dreamer74 04-26-2008 12:51 PM

Buddy has always been pretty quiet. He likes to look out the door and will bark at birds once in awhile, or if he really wants our attention and we are ignoring him he will sit at my feet and bark until I pick him up.

EmrldShdwQueen 04-26-2008 01:26 PM

Out of my 9:
Hadley is extremely quiet

Brooke, Ryder, and Tucker are all fairly quiet the majority of the time

Faith is pretty vocal when she wants to be, but she can also be very calm

Mikayla, Lola, and Sophie bark when there's something they don't like or something they want

And Maddie is just a loudmouth...lol

BubblPopElectrc 04-26-2008 01:50 PM

I think quietness is relative but with that being said, my two are pretty quiet. They only bark if something is out of the ordinary; a dog is barking outside, someone is screaming/yelling outside, etc.

They are well socialized so they don't typically bark at other dogs or people when we go on walks, are traveling, etc.

crystalsmom 04-26-2008 02:05 PM

I can take Crystal anywhere and everywhere. People would not even realize that I had a dog with me after a very long airplane ride.

She does talk alot and will bark once or twice when someone knocks on the door or wants to be picked up. Oh heavens yes there is one other time it's when she knows "Dancing with the Stars" is on since she wants me to hold her and dance. I did it a couple times a couple years back and she never forgot. Does anyone else have yorkies with elephant in their pedigree:Ds

MissLizzie 04-28-2008 04:03 PM

Itsy only makes noise when she's in her playpen and she wants my attention. When she's out and when we're out for walks she never barks at anyone. She always wants to greet and sniff people. When we walk by she pulls towards them with her little nubby tail wagging like crazy, but she never barks at them, or at other dogs.

We were worried about a yappy dog and how our neighbors would react before getting Bernie. It has turned out well because I think we had a strategy in mind from the start. He are some tips from what worked for us:

1) The couple of times Bernie initially barked for attention he was ignored and quickly learned that he'll get what he wants by being a good quiet boy. What he'll do now is run up to us (we can tell he's bouncy with excitement) and show us that he's sitting - "now please play with me". It is so cute - and quiet.

2)We decided from day one that Bernie would sleep in his own bed somewhere outside the bedroom. We figured that this would help him be independent and make him less anxious when we left for work. As it turns out he has not bark while we're away.

3)We purposely avoid starting little games by not excitedly repeating words like "WHO'S THAT?, WHO'S THAT" whenever the doorbell or telephone rings. Instead we stay calm whenever there are loud noises, doorbells, etc. Not that we do it much anyway, but we also make sure not to blast music or the tv in order for him to keep a calm demeanor (like his surrounding environment).

4)We also decided from day one not to feed him from the table so he doesn't whine, bark, and beg for scraps. We eat and he barely notices. If anything he goes and munches on his own kibble whenever he does notice that we're eating.

I'm sure you'll find plenty more advice using the search feature of this website. I can't say with 100% certainty that this "strategy" will work for every dog but it seems to have worked for Bernie. It may sound strict but I think it makes for a happy healthy dog when balanced with lots of love and rewards at the same time. Good Luck!

Funny Story

ok so previously I posted Buddy was pretty quiet, well not last night. I am sitting on the couch with a blanket (because I have a cold and feel miserable) and buddy is on my lap chewing on his Kong, pretty soon he gets the cookie (kong treat)out and the kids start to play with him so I put the Kong on the floor. Pretty soon he is back on my lap digging at the blanket so I tell him no and show him where I put the Kong, thinking that is what is is looking for. Well no that is not what he wants and keep jumping up and digging so I am getting frustrated and put the blanket on the floor and tell him he can't jump up anymore. In the mean time I have looked all over the couch trying to figure out what he thinks he wants. Well that is not what he wants either and now that I won't let him back on my lap he is on the ottoman barking his head off at me. So finally I give up and get off the couch, as I stand up a speck of cookie the size of a lady bug falls off my leg, which now appears to be what he wanted all along.
I guess he is only quiet when there are no kong cookie crumbs around.

Kacee has always been very quiet most of the time, too. Today we were driving down a street and an Amish buggy was going the other way and she barked three or four times very urgently! :D I can't remember if she has seen an Amish buggy before, but she knows what horses are and I think that was what got her going more than the buggy!;)

I believe the secret to having a quiet pup is maximum socialization at a very early age. Of course, you also have to take into account their personality. Some are just a lot more hyper than others. Just like people.;)

YorkieChick1 04-30-2008 01:22 PM

Brooke is very quiet, if she barks I know something is wrong!! My other 4 dogs are barking banchees!!

missashlee28 05-03-2008 08:11 PM

My dogs are vocal, but know exactly when they can be and when they can't. At first we had barking/whining problems, but just filled a soda can with pennies and shake it when they want them to be quiet, along with the quiet command. Then treat them. Within a single day, they figured it out. Now, they only bark when it is play time or when they are trying to warn me of visitors/weird noises/etc. I know people say that Yorkies are "yappers" and it annoys me to no end! I think with persistence and positive reinforcement you can train your dogs to do anything!

I am hoping to bring my yorkie out with me as often as possible (work, errands, etc.), but he will need to be quiet in order for us to get away with this :) People say yorkies have a reputation for being "yappy" and this makes me a bit nervous. Does anyone have a yorkie that's quiet and that they're able to keep with them when out and about?

My 2 are "yappy" but when we go places they are quiet.

Rory072807 05-13-2008 11:08 PM

Mines quiet, but she sure lets you know when someones coming in the room at night or if one of the other dogs steps on her she quacks like a duck! :D

MsFamousHepburn 05-13-2008 11:55 PM

Xavier was very quiet....before we rescued Sasha! Sasha is quite the "yapper" and so Xavier feels the need to join in with her sometimes. They only "yap" when someone is walking near our house or when someone comes home and doesn't greet them first thing :) !

AmeliaBadelia 05-14-2008 05:02 AM

Amelia is the same. She hardly barks at all. She only whines if something is really bothering her, or barks when she gets startled (for instance, when DD comes into the room in the middle of the night b/c she's scared/sick, etc.). No complaints with my little girl. :)

I was wondering how things were going with Sasha! :)
