| How do you teach them to law down? My puppy learned to sit quickly. However, I am having trouble teaching him to lay down. Any tips? Thanks!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | What worked for me....have him sit then press on his shoulders more or less forcing him down while repeating whatever word you are using...Lay...Down...give him a treat and repeat Good boy, Lay. Just keep repeating the motion and phrase with a treat.....he'll catch on.

| Riley learns tricks in a VERY odd way. Lol. I tried and tried for about three weeks to get him to lay down and it never worked. Everything I did never worked. So I just gave up. Then about a a week later, I just looked at him and said lay down and what do ya know. The little stinker just laid down. Lol. Since then, he has been doing every single time I've told him to. It seems like it takes a while for Riley to understand it and I stop teaching him for a while and he gets it. Lol. |

| Megan trained all of our dogs and she did a great job. For lay down she had them sit. Then she would take a treat and move it from their nose to the floor while saying lay down. Eventually they would just lay down when she said it. Tucker used to kind of jump up and slap both paws on the ground to lay, it was really cute!

| I used a treat in front of their face and just kept saying lay down as I moved it down lower.

| I did the same thing as teri88 mentioned above. First I would have Renji sit, then would put the treat right between his two front legs and under his chest. It took a few times before he would actually lay down instead of standing up and backing away to get the treat. However, he eventually figured it out. I also saw on TV that you can put them into the sit position and then lift up one or both of their front legs and gently press down on the back to get them to lay. I haven't tried it, but it seemed to work. Good luck with it! |

I brought the girls for training and that is how we were taught to make them lay down. The command that I give is down, and lower the treat to the floor...don't give it to them until they stay for a few seconds though.

| I'm having a hard time getting Mocha to lay down too. My boyfriend said it's probably because he's already so low to the ground lol Anyway, in our training class, the teacher showed as the "bridge" method. You sit down on the floor with one leg straight out in front of you. Arch your leg to make a little "bridge". Lure your puppy under the bridge (your leg) with a treat. He should go under your leg to get the treat. Have your leg low enough so that he has to lay down in order to get through the bridge. If he goes under the bridge but doesn't lay down, you can press down a little bit (not too hard though) with your leg. As soon as he's in the down position, say the command to him (down, lay down, lay, etc.) and give him the treat. Last edited by T Doll; 12-08-2007 at 10:15 AM. |

| I taught like the others did. Putting him in a sit and then putting a treat on the floor right in front of him and then pulling it toward me. He picked it up quick, but has forgotten cause we haven't done it in awhile. Now, when I say "sit", he speaks!!!! LOL.
