| My Golden Retriever used to do that, the second the door opened she would bolt, and she would sometimes make it as far as a couple blocks away. It's hard because when you chase them they run to get away from you, but you need to get them. She doesn't do it anymore, it could be because she's older now. Hopefully someone will have some advice for you!

| Sebastian is a run away, and I have to be so careful when someone comes to the door too. Piper on the other hand stays right next to me when he's outside.

| If you can, I'd put up a baby gate to block him from the door. Then you have to reprimand him every time he runs out of the door. You can tap him on the nose w/ a bit of news paper. You should also utilise time out. You can put him in a room if he runs out the door. Or it you have a crate that would work too. Or if all else fails....you can hold him when you open the door. lol. We have to do that sometimes w/ Mr. Biggs, because lately he's taken to walking out the door to "greet" our visitor. lol

| He obviously thinks he's the alpha dog, not you. He has to be taught that YOU go out the door before him or he doesn't go out at all. Cesar Milan had a show about this not so long ago and it just requires you working diligently with him. Doorbell rings...SIT. STAY. And every time you go out together you go out the door first, not little Mr. Bossypants. LOL. Good luck.

| Baby gates sound like a good idea. When I move into my own house, I will definitely be putting up a playpen on the inside of the front door as mine can jump over a baby gate easily. It isn't fun to chase after them when they can run like wind and to risk them running out on to the street.

| Still working on this - Sargie is 11 months old...he has gotten much better via a vis obedience training, with some help from Bark Busters - although he is one tough customer (we started with the vocal discouragement, moved to training aids, then had to move to the dreaded spray bottle). He used to bolt out the door constantly and yes, it's the whole alpha dog thing...now if he sees I have keys he sits and lets me leave - seems to have outgrown always trying to get out with me -, but if he is in a playful mood and I open the door to get the mail or such he will still bolt. It's dangerous because he runs like the wind, normally toward a busy road, and I can't catch him. The last time this happened I turned and instead of running after him and calling "come" (which he had had some training in - but let's face it, he didn't see the point in obeying) I called him, turned and ran back to my house. He ran right after me right up the steps and inside...probably won't work for every pup, but I never would have caught him - it's worth a try if you're in a position like I was at the time. But it's true, you have to do the diligent training with the door, till he gets it. I haven't gotten there yet. Sargie and CS |

| Meka's pretty good now, though it wasnt always that way. She listens very well when the door opens. I can even let her run a little ahead of me, because she's been doing so well with listening. However, when we walked out to the car the other day... she was right at my feet and I told her to sit. But when I looked up, she had bolted next door to a man that was putting his trash out. So, needless to say there is still work to do with her. I think it takes a lot of persistance and being very firm with your commands

| My mini schnauzer has always run away. I dont understand why. She doesnt even look back when you call to her. She just hauls asphalt down the street crossing back and forth peeing on everyones lawn. If you figure out how to stop it, I would love to hear! Once she got out and we didnt know, she came back on her own. We found her sitting on the front porch I guess she finally got through peeing on everything. She is almost 10 yrs old and I've never been able to stop her. She sits, rolls over and shakes hands tho' Good luck!

| Mabe you could try rewarding him with what he wants when he sits and doesn't run. For instance, he obviously wants to be outside and if he sits by the open door without running, get his leash and take him for a walk. If he runs, chase him down and put him in his crate or somewhere confined. Not that I have that much experience, but it seems like yorkies have tons of energy and draining that energy( with a walk or a hard game of fetch) before the training session might also really help. Also, is he neutured? He might be after a female nearby. HTH! |

| My poodle was like this when she was younger. When she was by anyone who opened the door, she would bolt out and run around the neighborhood. There was one time when we chased her for a block. Now that she's a bit older, she stays on command when we open the door. But there are times when she still bolts out, and that's when she needs to potty. Sometimes we still need to chase her when this happens. Inside the house, she listens so well, but when she's outside, it seems all of the things we taught her disappears |
