Default How do you keep your Yorkie's teeth clean?

Hi everyone - me again!

I thought I would ask everyone to tell us how they keep their furbaby's teeth clean? Has anyone found a particular brush that works well or a toothpaste that is well liked by their furbaby. I see that there are battery operated brushes offered on the Net which are supposed to be quiet and I wondered if anyone had tried one? My furbaby just fights and wriggles so much, that I find it almost impossible to clean her teeth. Does anyone have any tips for getting them to relax a bit so you can do the job effectively?

Luv

I'm ashamed to admit that i haven't even started brushing Pixie's teeth yet, she's 7 months old. She has alot of baby teeth to come out, so she has double rows of teeth! I give her chew sticks which seem to help. I have also heard that petzlife gel is supposed to be fantastic, I'm going to buy some online very soon and give it a go.
Also, i think i would rather use a little cloth over my finger to brush her teeth, less harsh for her very tiny mouth, I don't think pixie would much like a brush in her mouth!

I use PetZlife, and it really is fantastic. It comes in gel form or spray. I prefer the spray. They freaked out a bit when I first stasrted using it, but now they tolerate. I just lift the upper lip and give a quick shot to each side. It has helped with the inflamed gums, the brown tarter and the bad breath.

Default toothbrush

I found a toothbrush that fits over my finger. since it is on my finger it is easier to get into Lola's mouth and she is not so scared of it. also it is soft so not abrasive. I have been using for a few months and she is fine with it. It actually came with one of the dog toothpastes that I got.

I use a piece of gauze wrapped around my finger. It cleans much better than the finger toothbrushes and is way gentler than other toothbrushes, plus the girls don't fight like when you're trying to put something else in their mouths. It is also very easy to ensure you are getting all the teeth front and back. I also use Petzlife Gel a couple times a week.

Thanks everyone for all your replies. I am going to get the PetZlife and I will try and use a finger brush or gauze as well. I think I will probably try the gauze first and see how that goes. I just know that there is going to be a battle! She will probably wriggle and wriggle.

Thanks again.

I know i am in for a long battle with Pixie too! I mean, this is the pup that hates having her puppia harness put on because she doesn't like the sound of the 'click' on the buckle! she can be VERY difficult and uncooperative sometimes!

I struggle to clean my Yorkies' teeth too, they can't half wriggle when they don't want you to do something!

I do clean my two Skye's teeth. I use a brush & Petrodex toothpaste, poultry flavour. But they're easy about their teeth, when the judge is going over them on the table, they're so good I just say 'Teeth" & they sort of smile to show them
With the Yorkies it's like wrestling a fifty stone bear!

BUT when my eldest was about seven, at the vets for her booster, they were tut-tutting about her teeth & talking general anaesthetics, scrapes etc. We were going on holiday that weekend to Scotland, so said I'd arrange it for later. While there we happened to pass a pet shop with a window display full of this new Yorkie food that had been launched that month, Royal Canin, so I went in to ask about it. She'd been plagued all her life with the trots, lots of antbiotic courses to little avail, so I was always looking for a remedy.
The shop owner was really helpful, gave me lots of leaflets, a special book on it that was his, samples etc.
In the booklet, one of the things it stressed was how the kibble had been specially designed to help sort out the tooth problems that the breed was prone to...all sorts of diagrams showing how far each tooth bit into the stuff like a scientific treatise!
Me, cinic that I am thought, 'Oh yes, pull the other one."

Anyway, I started her on the food. The trots cleared up within a fortnight
Best of all, when I took her for her booster a year later the vet said he'd never seen such clean. healthy teeth on a middle aged Yorkie! He says the same now she's almost 13 ......seems to have forgotten about threatening dentistry!
So now I've got the two younger ones on it as well.
And I'm not on commission for Royal Canin, honest

xx

I have seen the video for this Yorkie food on the Royal Canin website..I too was a bit like...hhmmmm yeah right....but pixie is on Royal canin now anyway, her breeder had her on it so i carried on...and she's doing brilliantly on it, so i thought i would give this Royal canin especially for yorkies a try when she's old enough, i think the bag i looked at said from 10 months and pixie is 7 months. I'm glad you mentioned this food and reccommend it!

Yes, I put my two youngest on it at ten months as recommended, Ellie has only just switched to it. Before that they were on the Royal Canin Mini Junior.
I've high hopes that their teeth will be wonderful !

Tilly is 3 now. I got some petzlife gel a month or so ago I use it every day. Now her teeth are not really cleaner but are no worse. I think I might start trying to clean them as well. I used to clean them with poultry toothpaste on my finger but she didnt mind although it didnt make them cleaner. She is on kibble but I was going to get some canin yorkie as it is on offer 2 bags for price of one. think I will get some for her.

Where did you see that offer, Chantilly Lace?
I've never seen it on offer, ever. Always have to order it in & pay full price at our village pet shop.

If you keep your eye on this site : Pet Planet (bottom of page for Yorkie28) or go on their newsletter list, they often have RC special offers.

I don't have a Yorkie yet but when I do he will be treated like my other dogs -a mix of Royal Canin Dental and size specific RC Sensitives. Plus Plaque-Off and daily brushing. I have just found out that Petzlife Spray and Gel is now available here and will be trying that before too long. I have a teeth fetish
