getting yorkie what do i need to expect. I have never owned a yorkie before. What should I expect? He is going to be about 10 weeks old when I get him. Are they easy or hard to potty train? But I cant wait to get the little guy. He is just so cute.

Congrats on your yorkie when you get him! Yorkie's are little bundles of joy! When I first got Oreo, it only took me a week to potty/poopy train him on the wee-wee pads, but this was very strict training, everyday wouldn't stop until he got it . He's sooooo hyper, so full of life they love a lot of attention, don't like to be alone a lot, they are very loyal and obedient but can be very stubborn at times. Well at least mine is! Ginger on the other hand, is a sweet heart. I've noticed the girl yorkies i've seen are more laid back, calm.. down to earth! but nonetheless.. yorkies are the best! oh and just be aware that these llittle ones can get hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) so you should always have nutrical handy or honey/sugar!

They are very hard to potty train, but are sooooo worth it! Make sure your vet is a good small breeds vet! Godd nutrition is important too--see one of the many posts on puppy food. You are in for the love of your life!

We just got our baby Bella Friday Make sure you ahve some nutricl if the breeder doesn't give you any. Right now we give Bella about an inch (it's in a tube) morning and night. We also bought a bunch of those small velour blankets ($4.99 at Trage). They wash easy and she loves to cuddle in them. Bella loves her playyard. We bought the cheap one at Walmart $37.98 and she just loves it. We put a wee wee pad in it at one end and blankets and some stuffed animals to cuddle with at the other end. Also we bought 2 baby gates (again walmarts $9.82) to close the kitchen off for her. She has a little pet den in there with stuffed animals, blankets and then not far away is her food and wee wee pads. She loves her nylabones and also loves little squeak toys. Her favorite does seem to be my husbands slipper though Also be sure to doggy proof the room she will be in. Bella will be in the kitchen when we leave but in our family room (where playyard is) while we are home. When we can't keep a very close eye on her she goes in the playyard (only cried the first couple minutes, never again). Make sure all cords, dust bunnies, papers, anything she can get in her mouth is up!!! HAVE FUN - we sure are

| Congrats on the soon-to-be new addition! Good advice so far. I second having nutrical, although I've never had to use it. But it's good to have on hand. Potty training can be hard. Don't set high expectations for a good while. Be sure to be patient and consistent. I suggest that before you get your puppy you should try to decide what method(s) you are going to use. Are you going to train him to go on a puppy pad or outside? Are you going to crate train the puppy? I use crate training and I'm a huge fan of it. You can do a search or post again and I can give some advice. If you try to make some of these decisions ahead of time, it might help ease the transition for not only the puppy, but for you too. And don't worry if something doesn't work. Some things are just trial by error! Mainly just expect the unexpected! Some puppies are sluggish and apprehensive at first and others are full of energy and act crazy! Have a few good fun toys, and maybe a shirt or something with your scent on it for when you are away (especially if you crate train). Good luck!

I have decided that I am going to train him on the puppy pads. At least at first. I want him to mainly be an inside dog and I figured that would be the easiest. I am also going to crate train him. We travel quite a bit and I want him to sleep in the crate at night. and I don't want him to freak out if I have to put him in the crate for some other reason. I am getting more excited every day for the little guy.

Congratulations! You will have the best time with your new addition! Yorkies are extremely smart, intuitive and loving. A forever friend and a family member to love and cherish. Training is not quite as hard as it seems, be very persistant. Outside after meals and up from naps and a night's sleep. Just like a baby, watch their behavior. Circling around and sniffing are signs of needing to go outside. Good luck and we are very happy for you! CoCo's family Antoinette (CoCo's Mom)!

Congratulations on your soon to be addition. I also use pee pads and Gucci has done pretty well. You need to be patience and consistence. Your baby is pretty young so u will definetely be patience. Every so often take him to the pee pad so he gets use to it.

Welcome Home Congratulations on your new baby. I too am a new mom of 10 week old Maggie. This is my first Yorkie, and I'm learning every day. I started out crate training. I would get up all through the night to take her out, when she cried. Then about the 4th night, she slept all night. Well, I thought she did. A couple of days ago, I was in the process of washing her blankies. I noticed that they were wet. She had been tinkling in her crate. She only has about an 10" square to sleep in. I was shocked. I now leave her crate door open at night and put down a tinkle pad, just in case. I always get up myself anyway about 2am, so now I take her out also. It is working great. So far the tinkle pad is staying dry. I did however order the Wizdog. I will be using that when the weather is very bad. Her crate is in the kitchen with a baby gate, (which she learned how to climb, now it has slick panels) her toys, food and water. She only goes there when we are mowing the lawn or taking a shower. She has a playpen (from Petsmart) outside. You must watch out for hawks. Hubby made a shade cloth top for our playpen. We use a retractable leash at all times too. She likes it when we release the button so she can run like lighting for 16 feet. Don't forget the Nutrical or Nutristat. Maggie gets hers in the morning and also before night/night. Usually when they get to be 4 months old, you won't need it anymore. Never hurts to have it on hand though. If your decide he/she is not going to eat at all, then try scrambled egg, cottage cheese, boiled chicken breast, rice. Don't let them go 8 hours without eating something. Maggie did pull that one on me. I was a short order cook for a few days. Now, I grind up her dry Iam's puppy food and mix it with about a teaspoon of Gerber baby chicken or anything above. For additional moisture, I use 50/50 diluted Goat's milk. I tried using warm water, but she would turn her nose up. Regular milk is too hard on their tummys. I tried that too. She would have wet burps. Like I say, I'm learning too. Somethings works for some and some for others. The best thing to do is to stay with the general principles and raise your baby the best way a parent can. Even with human children, they are all nourished basically the same, but raised completely different. They both require a lot of love, and in return you will also be loved.

All the advise everyone else gave is pretty accurate. All I can add is just be prepared to fall in love because in all my years as a pet owner I have never experienced another breed like the yorkie. They are definitely addictive and I honestly can't see myself owning another breed besides a yorkie for the remainder of my life. I am maybe lucky but my Teddy is 16 weeks old and has been brillant in picking up everything he is taught. I can't even remember the last time he had an accident indoors. Just remember that persistance and love, love and more love go a long way. Congrats and ENJOY!

All I can say is stitches29 you know my dog like the back of your hand. I have had him for 2 weeks now and he has been the best boy ever. (Except for the part of not wanting to eat.) Tried everything. I must have 4 bags of dog food in my pantry. We tried the Loaf thing with him and the first time he would eat it like it was the best thing ever. Then the second time he wouldnt even touch it. We have been making him some chicken, rice, and carrots. He eats that really well. We have had two scares with him though. He had to be rushed to the vet twice with hypoglycimia. My vet said he has coccidia and that is why he kept becoming hypoglycemic. He only has one more day of meds to go but he is already way better. He eats now. And we have been giving him nutrical a couple of times a day. We started cutting back when he started eating. I was lucky on the crate training part. His mommy before me had already started him because he was being shipped. So he didnt mind being in his little room. I dont have a small crate for him. I got a bigger one so he could be in it and play. So far he loves it. We have a pillow at one end and a puppy pad at the other and for the most part he wont go in his crate. He will if its the last resort but every morning about 6:30 he wakes up and starts barking at me to take him outside to go potty and he does. If he is in the house just roaming around he will run around until he finds his puppy pad and go on it. couldnt ask for a better puppy. Every day is a learning experience with this little guy but i wouldnt trade it for anything.

Finiky Babies Good morning, lv2ridequads I'm so happy that your little one is doing better. We will have had Maggie two weeks this Thursday. If I could just get her to let me know that she needs to tee tee, things would be easier. She is so quiet, except when she sees something out of place. Then she will bark at it with her little hinny in the air. I have to ask her if she needs to tee tee. She always beats me to the door and sits calmy while I hook her leash on. When I get that leash on, better everybody get out of her way. She flies down stairs like she going to a fire. Soon as her little feet hit the grass, there goes the tee tee. She is eating better. She like to strut that belly. Her daddy thinks its cute. The vet may not think its so cute though. Maggie is only 10 weeks old. How old is your baby?

Toby is 12 weeks tomorrow. But he is so tiny. He hasnt really grown a whole lot. I dont have a scale that will get down to that low so its hard to see how much he weighs. But its right around a pound. He has been eating really good the past couple of days so hopefully we are over that hump. Maggie looks just like him. except his hair is a little longer. i want to get it trimmed. But he is still a cutie.
