| Taping Ears is Cruel? I called the vet today, to get an appointment for Moochies shots and a puppy check up. I asked if the vet would help me with the taping as the scotch tape did not work for 5 seconds. The girl there said that most vets won't do such procedures because they consider it CRUEL? I've never in my life done a cruel thing to one of my animals and I really can't see how taping ears is cruel? It's not painful.....? I felt like such a bad puppy owner......

| Never had to tape my furbabies ears...however, many YT'ers have... and Ive never heard/read anything negative about it. I think in the end, what matters is what you feel is best for you and your pup

| I never had to do any of mine either, but so many yt member had, I don't think is cruel either, but you may want to ask what kind of tape they use for that |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I used duct tape on my Biewer Darla and her ears finally are up. I shaved them multiple times and tapes multiple times. It is not cruel and she didn't even try to remove the tape.

| Hi, I used paper tape by JJ. I found these 2 links to help you. Carolina Yorkies | Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand)

| Thanks. I'll try the masking tape as shown in one of the links or the paper tape. Probably any pharmacy has that. I decided to change vets after being told no vet would help with the ears. I only went there a couple times and I was not sold on them anyways. I'm trying one closer to my home which will make it easier anyways to come home from work and take either him or Corkie to any appointments Thanks for you help!

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Sometimes ears have to be taped--like when puppies are teethig. Be sure to allow the ear to get some air and take the tape off after a week. We tried all kinds of tapes over the years. Masking tape 1.5" wide worked the best for us. |

| I'd also don't see the cruelty in taping, unless some foolio was using packing tape or duct tape or something Out of curiosity -- for the sake of comparison only -- don't most/all vets dock tails, even though that's banned as cruelty in the UK?

| All I can think of is she confused what you said with cropping..which is cruel and most vets don't do it anymore.. I can't imagine why she would say that.

That's what I think too, some receptionists have no actual knowledge, and since vets aren't required to do the taping, probably thought you meant cropping, which has been outlawed. Remember, sometimes just shaving the ear is enough to make them stand, and shaving should always be done before you tape. I wouldn't use duct tape, it doesn't allow the skin to breath, either masking tape, or tape meant for human skin would be better. Also, some members have said that they would rub the ears a few minutes each day, encouraging blood supply, and this was all that was needed.

| I don't think it's cruel. I had to tape Yoda's ears as just shaving didn't work. I'm such a softee that I used gauze then masking tape over it so that not too much tape was stuck to his hair. It took about 3 weeks and about 10 times with the tape (the first couple tries didn't last that long) and his ears were up.

| Thanks for your response ladies. I changed vets and she did not see taping as evil or cruel. Amazingly enough, she said some breeders bring both ears straight up........ then superglue just the very sides of the ear where they meet. She did not say this was mean, although..I kinda freaked when I heard that. Course I've gotten superglue on my fingers and it did not hurt... I will be trying the masking tape tho:-)

As for cruelty wouldn't taping a bandage be about the same thing?
