I don't think it's cruel. I had to tape Yoda's ears as just shaving didn't work. I'm such a softee that I used gauze then masking tape over it so that not too much tape was stuck to his hair. It took about 3 weeks and about 10 times with the tape (the first couple tries didn't last that long) and his ears were up.
