She's quoted in this article: Breeders dogged by Pennsylvania's new laws - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Quote:
Gloria Shank, owner of Glosrun Kennels in Salem, said enforcement needs to be concentrated on kennels that operate without a license, so-called "backyard breeders."

"They're the ones that give the people who are legal a bad reputation," Shank said. Her facility housed between 151 and 250 dogs last year and passed two inspections with no negative scores or remarks, according to state records.
She had no negative scores at the time, but we must remember Pennsylvania had some of the most lax laws on kennel conditions at the time. I can't imagine someone not passing. The bottom line is she's a commercial breeder, and why would you want to knowing purchase from a commercial breeder? Many of us are not only concerned about obtaining healthy dogs, we actually care about the breeding conditions of the breeding dogs. Please do not buy from a breeder unless you have personally visited their home. If you do not visit the home or kennel you are condoning the suffering of millions of dogs.

Default glosrun kennel

My husband is the biggest dog lover and yorkie lover you will ever find, he has been to Gloria's kennel many times. We stand behind her, we have the most lovable, healthy, happy yorkies thanks to Gloria.

The home page of her website is enough for me! Breeding is a "full time job," which says she makes her living off the backs of her dogs. She mentions teacups by saying she sells dogs 2lbs-10lbs. Also on her adult dog page, neither Yorkie female looks standard or well kept and she mentions that one mom is "very small," and the other as "very tiny." She registers some ckc & aca and has a kennel with that many dogs! Not a breeder I would ever consider, IMO.

I still find it very strange that some that is new to YT comes on and pulls up a very old post in defense of a questionable breeder.

This breeder is a commercial breeder and as Nancy stated; PA does not have a very stringent rating system for breeders; it is one of the states that has a high volume of Puppy Mills.

To the person that is defending this breeder, it is your choice to frequent this type of breeder, however, we at YT work hard at educating against buying from this type of breeder.

Living off the backs of dogs is definately a big no, no.

agreed. Let's say just for argument's sake, you have 100 dogs, now just how many loving assistants would you need to take care of these dogs. That is exercise daily, groom, feed, train, take to vet, love and socialize? Now this is a 24 7 operation. Maybe at nighttime just a skeleton staff, say two folks plus the business owner. Now to socialize to a home / house environment, how many houses would you need on your property? Oh let's not forget these houses should be lived in, with cooking, cleaning, and all the regular noises of a house. You'd still need a kennel, but I suppose you could rotate the litters in and out of the 3 houses. Now vet costs, boy that would be a big ticket item. Getting back to labour for a moment, let's say one person could care for 4dogs for 4 hours and another 4 for 4 hours. That makes eight dogs in an eight hour shift. 2 shifts 16 dogs in order to probably care for the 100 dogs, you would staff at 16 head count plus your night staff.

By now we are racking up the labour costs. Oh wait but of course commercial breeders have no where near that kind of manpower.

IMHO dogs do not belong in commercial breeding operations, no matter how well kept that kennel is. Dogs are NOT livestock. Their needs are way different. Dogs are destined for a family home, not the dinner table!

The standard states not to exceed 7 pounds. But, keep in mind this is for breeding and showing. It's not to say that from time to time an oversized or undersized yorkie will not be produced.

I do know this as i"ve seen bigger Yorkies than my Dude but just that I was a little disappointed.Gloria told me that he would be about 5 to 6 lbs.I also have a 31/2 lb female Yorkie and I sure didn't take the chance of buying from Gloria again.

By no means am I defending this person. However, a breeder can only guesstimate and should never guarantee what a final size a yorkie will be.

I've had big pups and birth that have turned out to be wee ones, and tinies end up to be on the larger end of the spectrum. 9 pounds is still small in the scope of things, the main thing is the dogs health and structure.

I must have missed this thread when it was first started, but since it was opened up again; The minute I saw 100 dogs kept in an area, with a cleaning system would be the time I walked out and told her I'm not interested!! Elaine

If you buy from this woman you are condoning puppy mills. If you do not know what a puppy mill is then you should do some research. In no way would I buy from this woman, ever. I feel bad for all the dogs she has and I pray that somehow they will all be rescued.

My husband and I bought our Yorkie from her 6 years ago, after we got married, and that was only because when we walked into her steel building with dogs on one side and horses on the other i was not leaving without taking one of the dogs. I do not consider it condoning her behavior, the dogs that were there would've been bought by someone else, atleast I know that I was going to give one a great home and love it unconditionally. I'm so thankful for Vinnie, and especially since the only problem he came home with was an ear infection, I got to know others who were not so lucky with the pups they brought home. I check on her website from time to time and I see that it's no longer operational, thank god, maybe it means she isn't operating anymore, I just wish I knew what happened to those poor dogs....
