| I won't give a bath until they are atleast 4 weeks old. I believe that they can't maintain their own body temperature until they are atleast 3 weeks old. (Someone wiser correct me if I'm wrong!) I'm not a big fan of bathing them when they are small. A chilled puppy is not a good thing. I do their first shots at 7 weeks. There's lots of conflicting info. on the shots.

dateline June 2006 VACCINATION NEWSFLASH June 2006 re: J Dodd's vaccine protocol - I would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to vets, and there will be skeptics. Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects. Politics, traditions, or the doctor's economic well-being should not be a factor in medical decision. NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY: Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (ie: canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory cells induced. Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines. Puppies receive antibodies through their mother’s milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, DELAY the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart SUPPRESS rather than stimulate the Immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at 1 year and 4 months will provide lifetime immunity.

| Thank you for that. So, when you have a puppy go to their new home, do you make sure they are on that schedule? Vets differ so much on this.

| You know, I've been real lucky thus far...My new families (well at least most of them) have all taken their new pups to my vet....so, they go with their little puppy history book, that he already knows what it contains and follows it and he already has the records on the puppy. That's the postitive side for placing pups locally....

| I can totally understand that. Unfortunately, I even have to travel to get to my good vet. She's the one that had me start at 7 weeks though. So I have to question that with her.

| I'm going to. Not that she can actually tell me that I have to give them earlier because I do it myself. But atleast she can see the supporting evidence of why I want to change. She's pretty good about that.

BANNED! | I do 8, 12 and 16 week vaccines and send my puppies home with a detailed vaccination schedule with dates for follow up vaccines. I don't do baths until they are 4 weeks old and I get them used to a blow dryer as well. |

| My Question??? We took our last litter to the vet to get immunizations, this time I was kinda wondering about doing it my self but, I'm not sure where to get the shots and what to give at what age. Should I maybe just go ahead with the taking themto the vet. I just don't like the thing with having to take them in there and expose them to something.

| I use Vanguard Plus 5, Plus CV for the first shot. Then Vanguard Plus 5 for the last 2. That is what my vet uses and what she recommends. Ask your vet and see what they recommend. You can find it online.
