| Have you had all the tests done on her to make sure she's healthy. You need to make sure the stud has had all his shots and tests too. Check the size of the male compared to your female. How old is your female, and what size is she. You want a male that's smaller the her. I don't know what else you need. I'll leave that to the experts.

| testing before breeding would be x-ray of hips and legs, Full blood panel & bile acids test. teeth, ears and eyes checked and Have the stud tested for STDs or bacteria prior to breeding. How much does your female weigh. ask your vet what he thinks about breeding her. Get a male stud thats smaller then she is and check out their backgrounds. Pedigrees theres so much more to think about and know, look threw some of these threads in the breeding section and learn all you can before you breed her. heres a great site with lots of info, http://www.debbiejensen.com/whelp_supplies.html Good Luck!!! |

If Phoebe really is the highlight of your life, then you need to do all you can to be prepared in every way for all that can happen in breeding.Start by asking yourself: Why do I want to breed my girl? Breeding is not something to be taken lightly or to do because you think it would be 'fun.' My suggestion is to find an experienced Yorkie breeder in your area that can mentor you and help you out. You may be able to get a recommendation from your vet if you don't know one in the area. Maybe the breeder you got your girl from...? Sadly, there is no way you would ever be able to learn a fraction of all you need to know by getting opinions and info off the internet. You have come to a very good place for information....welcome to YT! Last edited by BamaFan121s; 10-07-2007 at 05:56 PM.

I agree with you breeding is not a sport it is a passion and many many thing can go wrong do you know the things that can go wrong compared to the thing that go right you need to really do your home work and ask your self how much do you love your little girl and weigh you risk with breeding and if you are looking to breed to sell just look all over the internet everybody is breeding this little guys and the market is stiffled with yorkies everywhere you look and just think how many of these babies will end up in a rescue or worse and the health problems that are croping up is beyond words just think of the health problems that will be out there for the yorkie in another 5 years it will be very sad for all the yorkie lovers many of these babies will be put to sleep because someone just wanted to breed without having everything checked out before they breed to make sure they are breeding only the healthest of the breed instead of mass production because i want to have puppies i think it will be fun or i can make money well i am here to tell ya neither is true it is alot of work and if done right there is no money to be made if your luck you can maybe break even

| Sorry but I have to agree with Bama & cutiepie yorkies for all the reasons they listed. I really am surprised if you volunteer in a shelter why you would consider this? You might want to talk to the vet in the shelter and the organization you are volunteering for.

| Everyone has given you excellent advice here. I suggest you read some of the threads where people have posted the deliveries and you will see how devastating, frightening and at times heartbreaking theses deliveries can be. Ask yourself if you are prepared emotionally and financially to deal with the possible loss of your baby girl and or the expense of a c-section. There are numerous other expenses you will need to be prepared for. Don't jump into this lightly. Can you afford to take a month off to nurse a puppy that is orphaned? I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. Good luck in your decision. |

| All have given you advice on the ramifications of breeding without doing your homework up front. I'm gonna add my little story and a true story.... A week ago a young lady approached me. She has with her, her little Chi/Dobey.....Dobey was very pregnant.....What this young lady wanted was advice and what she needed to do. Now the pregnacy was accidental. So, I went on to feed her with every ounce of knowledge on what to prepare for....whelping supplies (tests were too late), what to look for the care of her baby....etc...I gave her a book to read, and a whelping video. I got a call yesterday afternoon. Little Dobey had gone into labor..I was on the phone, of and on with her for several hours....first stages of labor.....2nd stages and so on....as time went on she was getting more excited and labor was progressing and I was not feeling comfortable with the info she was telling me. At this point I told her to pack her little girl up and get her to Emergency....all signs pointed to a C-section....I got a call from her about an hour later....The vet was performing a C-section, spay and because this young lady was so upset the vet was going to keep momma and babies over night. I told her to prepare herself, because of the difficulty Dobey was having to whelp, the possibility that one or all puppies wouldn't live. Well little Dobey delivered 5 healthy babies... What I'm attempting to say is this was a hard lesson to learn on a first whelp. The young lady said she never wanted to go through that again...she never wanted to be responsible for another dog having an accident as this...Spaying Dobey would have been much simpler than this ordeal.
