| Can I breed a half brother and sister? I would really love to have another female puppy from the same breeder where I got Sophie and Ryder, and she has another litter born about a week before Ryder with the same father. I am absolutely IN LOVE with the puppies this sire produces (Sophie and Ryder are both from him and I've seen many of her other litters as well from this father...gorgeous), and now that I'm looking for an AKC female to breed with Ryder in the future, I would love nothing more than to have another from this lady. Is that a bad thing? They would obviously be half brother and sister, because they share the father, BUT the mothers aren't related at all in any way. If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it. Thanks! Last edited by EmrldShdwQueen; 10-05-2007 at 09:34 PM. |

| I would say no unless you are prepared to do a lot of work and research. Only top breeders who know what they are doing will do this. The dog has to be an excellent example of the breed, have several tests done and you would need to go to classes on genetics. It is way too risky if you don't know what you are doing and you can end up with a litter of puppies with several health problems because of it. You have to really know your genetics to be able to do it correctly, and this will take years of studying. If you really want to breed, you should get an unrelated female from a good reputable breeder. Or you could do the research but this will take a long time and you would most likely have to get a pup from another litter and what you learn or find out might mean you still won't be able to do it. So in general, unless you are professional and know the lines and genetics, then no you shouldn't do it.

| I believe that's line breeding and needs to be left up to the experts.

| A half brother/sister is inbreeding, not line breeding. The closest anyone might want to go is a daughter back to grandfather but that would also depend on what else is in common behind them. |

| Thanks so much guys, I decided against it after your very helpful comments! I'm just going to continue looking for another wonderful breeder. I don't want to chance anything when it comes to my babies. Thanks! |
