i can't believe he's 3/4 of an ounce? is that right? :eek: that's friggin small, omg i'd be so worried. My morgan was 2.5 ounces when born and i thought THAT was small. good luck, you must be so excited. can't wait to see all your updates and pictures on the little boy

I 'm a breeder, and I'm against selling a puppy that is as young as these are. I don't think a good breeder would put their puppies up for sale untill they are at least 6 weeks old. Too much can happen between 1 week and 6 weeks of age, especially to the smalles of the litter. It's like putting Meat on a platter.
I like to weigh my babies each week, take time to let them be a baby. You can't really tell a thing about what they will look like any way. If I would place a deposit on the smallest, it would probably die, Momma could lay on it, or it may turn out the biggest of the litter. Just isn't a good policy. Besides there is such a danger of the smallest one not being the healthy one, then somone could get up set, and disappointed.

I had no idea. This is crazy. What should I do? I haven't yet put a deposit, but am wondering when I would be sure? Not that I would completely reject the puppy because he's the runt. But I'm not getting a lot of good feedback overall. :(

Hi, I looked back at my email from the breeder and this is what it says:

"Hi Dani,
Wow! Im exhausted as well as mom! 5 Puppies.
This is unusually large litter considering the Mom is 4.5 lbs! I will keep you updated as they grow, Eyes open at 12-14 days, crawling by 4 weeks, running by 5 weeks
He will be Ready around Christmas Eve, if this is Too soon for you, we will hold on to him until you are ready
They are all suckling Mom , all seem quite Healthy
largest pup weight 2 oz , smallest 3/4 of an oz.

I am getting frustrated. Can anyone please help me? Should I go back to the original breeder? She is seems more reputable to me now :(

I know of a lot of breeders that list their puppies for sale from very tiny (just a week or so old), just so they get deposits on the pups, but don't actually give them pups out until they're 8 weeks. I see ads in the paper all the time for people advertising litters that won't be ready for a month or more.

My female's weight was 5lbs. before getting pregnant...she delivered 6 puppies, delivered on approximately day 60/61 and her puppies weighed between 3.4oz. to 5.2 oz. The stud was 3.5lbs.

So, yes, I would say that a puppy that only weighs 3/4 oz. is definitely very, very small. I am not saying there will be anything wrong with the puppy, just be cautious and watch it's development.

Here's my story: I posted in a KiJiJi ad that I was looking for a Yorkshire Terrier in December. This one lady emailed me and said she has a litter coming that will be ready to go to new homes in December.

A couple weeks later (September 24), she emailed me and said the litter was born! I was so happy. So I knew about the puppies before they were even born. That's why I knew about them at such a young age. But I was aware that the puppies won't be ready to go until December 24, she says. So she's still giving 12 weeks with the mom, which is good.

She owns a full fledged farm in the countryside and breeds Yorkies for sale to pet owners only (non-breeding contract).

She sounds legit to me. Do you think I could still ask to put a deposit on one of the other males if they're not taken yet? Or should I keep looking around?

Yes, I will watch the boy's development. Actually, she has been kind enough to agree to take pictures of him every single week until I have him, so that's quite nice of her. But I don't want to lead her on if I'm still not too sure. :(

Have you sold puppies before? Are you a breeder? Back to my original message: I would feel badly if I had to turn her down too! I don't want to take it too far. Should I stay faithful to her and keep watching his development? Looking forward to your advice!

I have a litter right now, and I couldn't imagine a pup being 3/4 oz. I mean...has ANY breeder had a pup that small?!?1? I can't imagine, the health issues that would probably go along with a pup so small....I just can't say I would have confidence in that. I also would NOT take a deposit on a pup that was only a week old. I would say that you can keep in touch, and watch the development, and then MAYBE when the pup is older, BIGGER, and stronger, if you would like to leave a deposit....then make arrangements with the breeder. I just find it VERY hard to believe that their pups are THAT tiny....I mean, 3/4 oz, is nuts. Maybe other more experienced breeders will have a better idea.

I feel somewhat pressured because out of the three boys, she said that one is already on hold (was given a deposit the DAY they were born). So now I don't really want the runt, especially if he was too small at birth. In all actuality, size doesn't matter. I just want it to be healthy and fits my personality like someone else mentioned in this thread.

I am not a breeder and I'm sure not an expert but just to give you an idea of the weight thing- the current world's smallest dog was 1.5 ozs at birth. I feel like the breeder must have made a typo or something. If it's true, I would run as fast as I could. That would be a very special needs dog. If you choose not to buy from this breeder I am sure you would find an excellent one right here at YT. Good luck!:)

Oh and p.s.;) You should not feel any pressure at the very young age the pups are. Only you know what feels right for you but that would be a warning sign to me.
