Yes, thank you. I haven't tried to tube him because he will swallow the milk when I put it on his tongue. I was told that as long as they will swallow on their own that I shouldn't tube them because they can get used to it and then won't nurse. I have been using DYNE mixed with puppy formula. I am using an eye dropper. It measures 3/4 ml when I use it. Do you know how much a baby can hold? So far I can get him to take 2 of those. Sylvia

I have (well my sisters) and at the end of the day I could say I did all that I could. In between whelps, I prepare myself and study and see if there is any thing that I need that perhaps it won't happen again. Although, we know it just happens sometimes. That puppy may be 1 of 3 litters are 1 of 3 puppies. We give that puppy our all because we brought it into this world, and it's our responsibility. (I've taken in a 1 ounce and they said she would likely die, but she's as healthy as a horse because I took her to the vet and asked them to teach me how to tube feed her)

I have been told to give preemies about 1 cc every hour to every 2 hours depending on how full their tummy feels and whether or not mom is providing some milk or not. He may get some milk from mom which is good and then you will only need to suppliment. You are right about tube feeding not being necessary if you are getting milk in him. You MUST keep this baby warm!!

You can wrap a cloth around him as his nurses, if he gets chilled death is certain. He really needs a heating pad. I understand money woes, is there someone you can borrow from? How is his breathing? Usually if they're premature their lungs are not developed well as they are still very "sticky inside". If taken to the vet they can give dex or dopram to help that.

Whether he is a preemie or not there are there 3 things to remember(to me) is Water (hydrate, sub q if available), Sugar (energy), and Warmth. Never feed a chilled puppy. I know if you're like me you're doing all you can for him. Please keep it up for him.

Thank you. I didn't know that about the rehostat. I will get one as soon as possible. No, I can't borrow right now for reasons of their own family doesn't have extra to spare. This little guy is breathing fine. He has a good pair of lungs but he sounds like a kitten. I could give the SQ water myself but as I understand it, it has to be ringers not tap water and my vet won't give me any ringers. I am making sure he gets milk with DYNE in it and I am keeping him as warm as I dare. Sylvia

i just had 2 babies last week that were 2.1 ounces i gave nutri nutri drops and warmed them on the heating pad after about an hour they started nursing and now they are up to 5 ounces and doing well i agree warmth is a must

Ok, then I am doing it right. I am trying to feed him every 2 hours and trying him on mom first. I try to get 2 - 3/4ml into him at a time. If I can see his belly is bigger than before I started I am happy.

I have 2 more smaller than him. I am keeping them all warm and they are right beside me. 2 born yesterday and this little guy today. Sylvia

You are doing good. I agree with the others about how important it is to see the vet, but I also understand if you CAN'T, then you can't as sad as that is. Just be sure and try to get him to nurse before you give him supplement. It is so important to get moms colstrum. Supplementing should be done AFTER he has nursed if he needs it. Even if you have to hold Mom in place to get her to stay there and nurse him, she will learn in a few days. She should be in there with him all the time except when going out to potty. You might have to stay right there with her to make her stay with him. And I am going to say it again.. WARM WARM WARM.. I cannot stress enough how important that is. I have to leave for a couple of hours but I will check back when I get home.. Please don't stop posting.. Keep us informed until this little guy is out of danger.

Yes, I know how important the colestrum is. I do indeed offer him mom before feeding him myself. Mom has not made an effort to leave him even to potty yet. When she goes I will hold him next to my skin until she comes back. Sylvia

If you have a heating pad put him on that I actually hold them up to the mom teat to nurse. Nutra Cal or Karo helps if you can get someone to get you some esbilac milk replacement so you can feed the puppy if she keeps refusing him. I will keep him in my prayers I know it is nerve racking. I had a first time mom (different breed) keep pushing a baby away and I kept putting her back she finally started nursing her and the baby did fine. Just keep him warm

Yes, that is the brand of milk I have and yes, I have to hold mom still. She is very squirmy and doesn't want me to do that to her but it's the only way I know for sure that he is nursing. He might be nursing on his own but she curls around him so I can't see. Thanks, Sylvia

He does look a little immature in the pictures. Did she go full term or was she early?? Sometimes first moms are nervous and dont take good care of the pups. Is she done delivering?? They dont usually settle down with the pups until they are done. Does she have milk? If she doesnt take care of him, can you put him on the other girl that just had puppies and knows what to do?
