YT 1000 Club Member | ![]() Thanks for the suggestions and replies. For those type of questions i would more than likely say spur of the moment. I can tell you love what you do and love your babies very much. --AND-- I would hate to be a person that missed out on a opportunity to get a pup of their dreams because they wanted to look at more options but I realize a breeder has more options of wonder homes to put their babies in. Thanks again! |

| ![]() Good list and I'm sure there are a lot more. How about How many breeders do you own ? How many litter a year do you have ? Have you knowingly or unknowingly ever sold to a pet store, broker or a puppy mill ?? Are you USDA certified ? What type of license do you hold ( A or B) ? Is your standard of care above what USDA’s standard of care is and how ? Do you ask buyers to stay in contact with you after the sale for update on pups ? Will you offer support (for questions/help) after the sale ? Do you have buyers referral and PH #'s ? Vet referral PH #'s? Have you ever have a dissatisfied buyer ? Why? and what did you do to correct ? Was the buyer satisfied with the way you handled thing? If not why? Are you willing to release the ph # of the dissatisfied buyer ? Have you ever had a violations or registry problem ? If so, for what and how corrected ? |

The best defense is education. However, most new puppy owners are in a hurry to get their puppy. It's along time commitment....shop around, be thoroughly comfortable with your breeder. You should be buying a relationship.

There are larger kennels that hold USDA licenses. If they state that they adhere to those standards only.. I'd run the other way. Being USDA certified, this is not something to brag about. See what the cage size requirement are, this means that as far as USDA is concerned this is how you can keep a dog. http://www.kimtownsend.com/csusda.htm http://www.kimtownsend.com/storage/csrabbithutch.htm Of course it is always better to deal with a small hobby/fancier breeder. and like you said education is the key to finding the best possible pup. | |

I'm into the mushy stuff too. As each one of my pup is whelped, cleaned, umbilical tied off, before I check them over and place them to mother, I kiss their eyes, nose, ears and little mouth to welcome them into the world.

YT 1000 Club Member | ![]() I forgot to add some other ones….. I believe the breeder history and character is a big factor also in where to get a puppy…. Have you had any history with dog abuse? Have AKC inspected you? If so, what did you get at the end? Are you involved in any groups? Have you ever went back on giving a puppy to some one? If so, why? Do you have any other animals (other than yorkies)? Are you willing to help pet sit (with pay of course)? Do you groom your dogs? Can you give me your breeding ‘philosophy?’ Have you ever had to skip a special occasion for one of your dogs? Do you have others that you rely on when you can’t be with your dogs (i.e. whelping is near and went away …)? Do you try to keep in touch with the new owners (for updates regularly)? What is the most special moment to you when whelping time comes?’ What do you say about someone that doesn’t spay/neuter their pet? Do you donate to a rescue organization/shelter? What are your procedures after a puppy is born? What are the qualities that you look for in a new home for one of your puppies? |

| ![]() Thank you for posting this list. I took a small list with me when I went to see the breeder who might have been a puppymill. One of the questions I loved, that I had found on YT, was the one about possible health risks in the Yorkie breed. When she answered none, I was laughing on the inside. I didn't ask a lot of the harder hitting questions because I knew I wasn't leaving with a puppy from her, so there was no point in wasting my time, the taxi driver's time, nor hers. |
